Duke Snider, the Hall of Fame center fielder for the charmed Boys of Summer who helped the Dodgers bring their elusive and only World Series crown to Brooklyn, died early Sunday of what his family called natural causes. He was 84.
Jane Russell, the brunette who was discovered by Howard Hughes and went on to become one of the biggest stars of the 1940s and '50s, has died at age 89.
Russell's daughter-in-law Etta Waterfield says the actress died Monday at her home in Santa Maria of a respiratory-related illness.
Hughes, the eccentric billionaire, cast Russell in his sexy, and controversial, 1941 Western "The Outlaw," turning her into an overnight star.
She would go on to appear opposite such leading men as Frank Sinatra and Bob Hope, as well as fellow actress Marilyn Monroe.
Although her film career slowed in the 1960s, Russell remained active throughout her life.
Until her health began to decline a few weeks ago, Waterfield said she remained active singing and working for various causes.

Duke was a buddy of Larry King's back when he was just a heavy smokin' radio guy.
Jane Russell, wasn't she a bra merchant, too?

She was just a "full-figured gal".
Remember listening to Larry on the radio back when I was driving a long distance to have a job. Don't specifically remember Duke being on with him.
Also remember listening to Sally Jesse Raphael on the radio before she got a TV gig and also a nationwide music show called "Nighttime America".
After driving off and on for about four years, we gave up the long distance and moved, saving hours and hours of driving from my life.

Remember? Larry went to Duke's after he got off work at Mutual. Jim Bohannon's America in the Morning show time.
Duke's was right catty-corner from the Southern yard in Alexandria.
Snippy was a driver, too.

Was Snippy ever in Duke's?
A little research reveals that "Night Time America", with Bob Dearborn, was the first nationwide satellite music show.
Who's left from the 1955 Dodger team? I know Carl Erskine still lives, Cy's daughter saw him several times when she attended college at Anderson U., located in his still-hometown. Looking at Wikipedia, I see that several others still live, including team members Tommy LaSorda and Sandy Koufax. Don Zimmer, too.
This is a long ways from, "It Comes in Threes".

WASHINGTON (AP) Actor Mickey Rooney told Congress on Wednesday that he was left powerless by a family member who took and misused his money.
"I felt trapped, scared, used and frustrated," Rooney told a special Senate committee considering legislation to curb abuses of senior citizens. "But above all, when a man feels helpless, it's terrible."
The 90-year-old film and television star told lawmakers that elder abuse comes in various forms, including physical and emotional. In his case, he described the abuse as financial.
In his testimony, Rooney did not identify the family member he contends abused him. But he has obtained a restraining order from a judge in Los Angeles keeping his stepson, Chris Aber, away from him until an April 5 court hearing.
Rooney has accused Aber in court filings of withholding food and medicine and meddling in his personal finances. Attempts by The Associated Press to find a working phone number for Aber have been unsuccessful.
Sen. Herb Kohl, D-Wis., who chairs the Special Senate Committee on Aging, said the elderly are particularly vulnerable because they are "often fragile" and their abusers usually stand little chance of getting caught.
Rooney began his film career in the 1920s and has appeared in scores of feature films and TV shows, including the musicals "Babes in Arms" (1939) and "Strike Up the Band" (1940) and the Andy Hardy film series. He was nominated for an Academy Award four times, including a supporting actor nomination for his role in "The Black Stallion" (1979). He received an honorary Oscar in 1982.

Marty Marion
ST. LOUIS (AP) Marty Marion, the 1944 National League MVP with the St. Louis Cardinals and a former manager of the Cardinals and St. Louis Browns, has died.
A team spokesman said Marion died Tuesday night of unknown causes in St. Louis.
The 6-2, 170-pound Marion was nicknamed the "Octopus" for his fielding prowess and was considered the best shortstop in Cardinals history before Ozzie Smith joined the franchise in 1982.
Marion was an eight-time All-Star and led NL shortstops in fielding four times. He managed the Cardinals in 1951, then was player-manager for the Browns in 1952-53. He also managed the Chicago White Sox for part of the 1954 season and all the 1955 and '56 seasons.
