He shouldn't have shoved Johnny.
Charlie Callas |
LAS VEGAS (AP) - Charlie Callas, a versatile comedian whose zany faces and antics made him a regular for more than four decades on television, in films and on casino stages, has died in Las Vegas. He was 83.
Callas died Thursday at a hospice, according to his sons Mark Callas and Larry Callas.
Callas was a rubber-faced, wiry framed comic whose rapid-fire delivery drew laughs and made him a frequent guest on variety and comedy shows.
"Everybody that met him, he left them with a smile," Mark Callas said.
For years, Charlie Callas made Johnny Carson laugh on the "Tonight Show." But Carson banned him from returning after Callas shoved Carson off his chair in a bid for laughs in 1982.
Mark Callas said his father knew every member of the Rat Pack, a group of actors that included Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford.
Callas toured with Sinatra and Tom Jones, had a role with Jerry Lewis in the movie "The Big Mouth" in 1967, and was a guest on TV variety shows hosted by Jackie Gleason, Ed Sullivan, Merv Griffin, Andy Williams and Flip Wilson. Callas guest-hosted on the "Joey Bishop Show."
EWING, Ky. (AP)Woodie Fryman, who pitched 18 seasons in the major leagues and was inducted into the Montreal Expos Hall of Fame in 1995, has died. He was 70.

Nixon in the late 60s and early 1970s, has died in Las Vegas at age 77 of cardiopulmonary arrest, according to the New York Times, citing a rep for the Clark County coroners office in Nevada. Fryes political impressions in the late 60s, including figures such as Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon, began his breakthrough. See this clip he posted on YouTube of an appearance on the Ed Sullivan Christmas Special in 1967 (see video after the jump):
His career really took off during the Nixon administration, when Frye (born David Shapiro) became a regular presence on television, and a headline act in clubs. He recorded four comedy albums in the early 70s, including I Am the President (1970); Radio Free Nixon and Richard Nixon Superstar (1971); and Richard Nixon: A Fantasy (1973). Nixons resignation caused Fryes national star to fade, but he continued working, releasing Hes Back! John Paul Getty III Dies; Oil Heir Led Tragic Life Feb 8, 2011 1:36 PM Text Size Print this page|EmailShare on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on DiggShare on Lifestream Theunis Bates
Theunis Bates Contributor LONDON -- John Paul Getty III, the heir to an oil fortune who was thrust into the spotlight in the 1970s after being kidnapped by Italian mobsters, has died. He was 54 and had been wheelchair-bound and in need of constant medical care since 1981, when a drug overdose left him paralyzed and almost blind.
Getty passed away Saturday at his family's country home in southern England. The cause of death was not disclosed.
His tragic, short life could be read as a parable, a familiar tale proving that money and fame can't buy you happiness. But John Paul III -- grandson of reclusive oil billionaire John Paul Getty, who was named America's richest man by Fortune magazine in 1957 -- had long been aware of that lesson, and spent much of his life trying to escape the obligations of his family's wealth.
John Paul Getty III, grandson of oil billionaire, art collector and philanthropist John Paul Getty Jnr. Getty Images John Paul Getty III, seen here in 1973, was kidnapped that year and held for ransom. As a teenager, John Paul III lived with his divorced mother, Gail Harris, in a castle in Italy. His father, John Paul Getty Jr., had abandoned his family in the 1960s and headed off on a drug-fueled tour of Europe and North Africa with new wife Talitha Pol -- a model, actress and stepgranddaughter of the Welsh painter Augustus John.
While in Rome, John Paul III followed a similar bohemian path. By the time he turned 15, he was living a life of hard drugs, fast cars and endless parties. His wild-child behavior saw him expelled from seven private schools, and in 1971 -- after being booted out of the final establishment, St. George's British International School in Rome -- he decided to become a professional painter. He sold his works to local restaurants and earned extra money modeling for life drawing classes.
Then on July 10, 1973, the then 16-year-old vanished following a long night out. Two days later, his mother received a ransom request. No longer married into the Getty family, she told the kidnappers that she had little money. "Get it from London," she was reportedly told over the phone, a reference to her former father-in-law, or ex-husband, who had both relocated to England.
Chuck Tanner | Visit Guest Book
Enlarged Photo PITTSBURGH (AP) - Chuck Tanner, who managed the Pittsburgh Pirates to one of the greatest comebacks in World Series history, has died. He was 81.
The Pirates said Tanner's family informed them of his death on Friday at his home in New Castle, Pa., after a long illness.
Tanner managed the Chicago White Sox, Oakland Athletics, Pirates and Atlanta Braves during his 17-year career, winning 1,352 games. His crowning achievement came in 1979, when his "We Are Family" Pirates rallied from a 3-1 series deficit to beat the Baltimore Orioles for the World Series championship.
Facing elimination in Game 5, Tanner awoke that morning to learn his mother had died in a nursing home. He remained with the team, made all the right moves, and the Pirates outscored the Orioles 15-2 in sweeping the final three games.
