NEW YORK (AP)When Jimmy Rollins saw New York reliever Duaner Sanchez come out to pitch the ninth inning instead of starter Johan Santana or closer Billy Wagner, he went straight to the batting tee to stay loose.

It didnt matter that he was due up sixth and the Philadelphia Phillies trailed by three runs. He thought they had a chance.

The ever optimistic NL MVP was right.

Philadelphia feasted on New Yorks makeshift bullpen for six runs with Wagner unavailable because of an injury, and Rollins hit a go-ahead two-run double to help the Phillies to an 8-6 victory Tuesday night to take back sole possession of first place in the NL East.

It started last year, Rollins said, referring to the Phillies comeback from seven games behind the Mets with 17 to play to win the division. You never give up.

The teams entered the three-game series tied for first after the Mets trailed the Phillies by 5 1/2 games on July 4. The Florida Marlins are tied with New York, one game back.

Series at a Glance

  3. Thu, Jul 24 - 12:10 pm ET

After Santana pitched eight dominant innings, the Mets had to make do without Wagner, who has muscle spasms around his left shoulder joint.

Manager Jerry Manuel said Wagners availability would be a midgame decision based on how the left-hander felt. But after batting practice he was told it would be better if Wagner took another day off.

After seeing that, you cant help feeling that you want to be out there, said Wagner, who has 24 saves in 30 chances. A lot of different things might have happened if I was out there. Id rather be the guy standing here taking the blame instead of letting my teammates suck on this one.

Manuel turned to Sanchez, a setup man, and he gave up three straight hits to start the ninth. Joe Smith (1-2) relieved and Carlos Ruiz drove in a run with a high bouncer that shortstop Jose Reyes fielded but missed stepping on second base instead of flipping to Damion Easley.

His mistake was not giving the ball up, said Rollins, a fellow shortstop. He already made the highlights by making the barehanded grab.

Shane Victorino hustled into second to prevent the first out of the inning.

Big play of the game was Victorino beating the ball down to second base, said Phillies manager Charlie Manuel, who was ejected in the third inning. Thats why we talk about hustle.

Pedro Feliciano relieved and pinch-hitter So Taguchi, who was 0-for-16 coming in, stroked a two-run double to tie it.

Rollins followed with a double that made it 7-5. After an intentional walk to Pat Burrell, Ryan Howard hit a ball back to Feliciano but he had trouble fielding it and could only get one out allowing another run to score.

Chad Durbin (3-2) pitched a perfect eighth, and Brad Lidge gave up a run in the ninth but finished for his 22nd save in as many chances.

The Phillies, who entered hitting just .248 over the last 13 games when they went 6-7, could have had a much bigger deficit to make up had they not made two big defensive plays in the seventh.

I guess we could put the whole notion of not getting timely hitting away for a day, Manuel said.

Right fielder Jayson Werth threw out Endy Chavez at home on a hit by David Wright, and second baseman Chase Utley made a diving grab of pinch-hitter Fernando Tatis liner with the bases loaded to end the inning.

The last time Santana faced the Phillies on July 4, he gave up two runs in eight innings but the Mets lost 3-2. On Tuesday, he allowed an RBI single to Werth in the first and Victorinos homer in the seventh after he retired 15 of 16 batters. He had four strikeouts, including the 1,500th of his career.

Jerry Manuel said he might have let Santana start the ninth if he hadnt given up a double to Burrell in the eighth.

The Mets took a 5-1 lead against Joe Blanton behind Carlos Delgados 450th career homer, a two-run shot, Raul Castros two-run homer and Wrights RBI double in the secondChavez was thrown out at home on a nice relay started by left fielder Burrell.

New York Mets' Pedro Feliciano leaves the game in the ninth inning of the Major League Baseball game against the Philadelphia Phillies, Tuesday, July 22, 2008 at Shea Stadium in New York. The Phillies beat the Mets 8-6.
New York Mets' Pedro Feliciano
AP - Jul 22, 11:01 pm EDT

Blanton was making his first start for the Phillies since being acquired from Oakland last week to solidify a shaky rotation. He took the spot of Adam Eaton, who was 3-8 with a 5.71 ERA.

Blanton came in having thrown 15 shutout innings against the Mets in two starts for the As and he looked as if he were pitching to form until he walked Reyes on four pitches to open the third. He gave up five runs and eight hits in six innings.

Charlie Manuel was ejected by umpire Marty Foster after the third inning when he went to ask Foster why he tossed coach Milt Thomson after Thomson disputed a checked-swing call by the third base umpire. Thomson yelled at Foster from the bench after he ruled Delgado did not go around on the swing before his homer. It was Manuels third ejection this season.

NEW YORK (AP)For the second consecutive night, the New York Mets built a three-run lead going into the ninth inning against Philadelphia.

This time, they had Billy Wagner ready to close it outand that made all the difference.

He makes it easy, Jose Reyes said.

Reyes three-run homer snapped a sixth-inning tie and the Mets, with Wagner back from a sore shoulder, rebounded from a demoralizing defeat by beating the Phillies 6-3 on Wednesday.

John Maine pitched seven effective innings and New York took advantage of a wild Brett Myers in his return from the minors to again tie the Phillies for first place in the NL East.

Well be there, Mets manager Jerry Manuel said. They have a good team, we have a good team.

Series at a Glance

  1. Tue, Jul 22 - Final
  2. Wed, Jul 23 - Final
  3. Thu, Jul 24 - 12:10 pm ET

New York had a great chance to take sole possession of the division lead in the series opener Tuesday night, but its makeshift bullpenmissing an ailing Wagnerblew a 5-2 lead for Johan Santana in the ninth inning of an 8-6 loss.

Wagner declared himself available Wednesday after testing his left shoulder before the game by playing long toss from about 250 feet and throwing off a bullpen mound.

The All-Star entered in the ninth and got three quick outs for his 25th save in 31 chances, securing New Yorks eighth victory in nine home games.

Of course you feel it, but I was able to stick with it, Wagner said. If I can compete, Ill be out there.

The training crew, they deserve a lot of this credit, he added. They were fantastic. They deserve a lot of the credit just to get me out there.

The series finale is Thursday, with Jamie Moyer pitching for the Phillies against Oliver Perez.

With the score tied 3-all, Damion Easley opened the sixth with the second of his three infield singles before Brian Schneider also singled against Ryan Madson (2-1).

Maine struck out trying to bunt, but Reyes drove Madsons next pitch to right for his 11th homer. He raised his right index finger high as he trotted from first to second.

I was excited there, Reyes said. I have to enjoy it because thats big there.

Maine (9-7) gave up consecutive homers to Shane Victorino and Geoff Jenkins in the second, but kept Philadelphia in check most of the way. Jimmy Rollins tied it at 3 with an RBI double in the fifth.

I just needed a good game, Maine said. I wasnt worried about walking guys.

The right-hander pitched only 19 innings over his previous four starts, going 0-2. He yielded six hits Wednesday, striking out five and walking two.

He attacked the strike zone a lot better, Manuel said. Thats huge for him.

Scott Schoeneweis and Joe Smith combined for a scoreless eighth.

Hoping to find his form, Myers made four starts in the minors before returning to the rotation Wednesday for his first major league outing since June 27. He entered 3-9 with a 5.84 ERA and said recently he realized he needs to use his fastball more and pitch more aggressively.

Still, the 27-year-old right-hander struggled with his command all game. He walked four straight batters in the first inning as frustrated Phillies manager Charlie Manuel watched helplessly, chomping on his gum while leaning over the dugout railing.

Marlon Anderson made it 2-0 with an RBI groundout.

I felt if the first inning didnt go that way we wouldve won the game and I probably would have pitched nine innings, the way I felt tonight, Myers said. I was excited to get out there. I had some fun out there.

Maine coughed up the lead right away, serving up the homers to Victorino and Jenkins in the second. Victorino connected Tuesday off Santana.

Myers loaded the bases in the third on a walk, a hit batter and Carlos Beltrans single. Easleys run-scoring infield single with two outs put New York ahead 3-2.

I felt like his stuff was good, Charlie Manuel said, referring to Myers. I think he was amped. He definitely wanted to do good. He didnt want to come out of the game. He had some fight to him. I think right now we need more looks at him.

Notes

Pedro Martinez left Shea Stadium in the seventh inning after learning his father died in the Dominican Republic, and the Mets right-hander was scratched from his scheduled start Friday night against St. Louis. RHP Mike Pelfrey will move up a day to pitch on regular rest in Martinezs place, and New York is undecided about a starter for Saturday. Martinez hasnt pitched since leaving his July 12 start with a sore shoulder and tightness in his groin. Jerry Manuel moved streaking Carlos Delgado up to the cleanup spot and dropped Beltran to fifth. It was the first time Beltran batted fifth since June 15, 2003, with Kansas City. Myers is 0-6 with a 7.91 ERA in 10 starts on the road this year.

NEW YORK (AP)Jerry Manuel was curious to see how his New York Mets would respond after a heartbreaking loss to Philadelphia.

They answered with two big wins.

Carlos Delgado hit a tiebreaking, two-run double in the eighth inning and Oliver Perez stifled the Phillies again, helping the Mets earn a 3-1 victory Thursday that gave them sole possession of first place in the NL East.

The Mets took two of three in the series after blowing a three-run lead in the ninth inning of the opener, putting them alone in first place for the first time since April 19.

Im very proud of the way this team bounced back after that game the other night, said Manuel, who has managed New York to a 21-12 record since Willie Randolph was fired last month. Weve been resilient for a long period of time.

Eric Bruntlett, subbing for a tardy Jimmy Rollins, tied a season high with three hits for the Phillies, who rallied for an 8-6 win Tuesday night but struggled to score after that. Philadelphia has lost four of five and will host Atlanta in the opener of a three-game series Friday night.

  2. Wed, Jul 23 - Final
  3. Thu, Jul 24 - Final

Somethings not in tune, manager Charlie Manuel said. We have to pick it up. I dont know if its hungry enough. I havent put my finger on it, but we have to get after it more. We dont now have that extra kick, the kick we used to have.

Manuel scratched Rollins after the NL MVP showed up late to the ballpark. He batted for J.C. Romero (4-3) and bounced into a fielders choice to end the game.

Thats one of our rules: Hustle and be on time, the manager said. Thats all I want to say about Jimmy. Weve got other things here.

Rollins, yanked from the Phillies 5-0 win over Cincinnati on June 5 for failing to run hard on a popup that was dropped, said he got caught in traffic.

Were not going to agree on this one, said Rollins, who met with Manuel before the game. I agreed with him on the last one but were not going to agree on this one. Charlies the manager. He doesnt want to set precedents for certain players. I understand that. Its already done. Me and Charlie spoke about it. Its done.

New York got another dominant outing from Perez, who had a season-high 12 strikeouts and allowed one run in 7 2-3 innings. The left-hander is 1-0 with a 0.35 ERA in 26 innings against Philadelphia this year and has a 1.35 ERA over his last four starts overall.

Just trying to make pitches and the more important (thing), I always say, trying to (keep) my team in the game, Perez said.

Delgado hit a two-strike pitch from Romero into the left-field corner in the eighth to drive in Robinson Cancel and David Wright, who was intentionally walked before the big first baseman came to the plate with two outs.

Left-handed hitters were 5-for-68 (.074) against Romero this season before Delgados clutch hit, which made the slugger 3-for-18 lifetime against the Phillies reliever. He is batting .397 with five homers and 16 RBIs in July after slumping for much of the year.

Im not doing anything different, Delgado said. I got my timing back.

Aaron Heilman (1-3) replaced Perez and got Jayson Werth to fly out with the bases loaded to end the eighth. Billy Wagner, who missed the series opener with a sore left shoulder, got three outs for his second save in two days and 26th of the season.

New York improved to 9-4 against the Phillies this year after going 6-12 against them last season and losing the final eight meetings. That head-to-head dominance helped Philadelphia rally past the collapsing Mets to win the 2007 NL East title.

Perez fired a called strike past Bruntlett at 12:10 p.m. in the unusual early start. Sections of summer-camp kids provided streaks of color in the upper deck of Shea Stadium, and construction workers at new Citi Field watched a few innings from beyond the center-field wall.

The kids and workers in hard hats were treated to terrific pitching performances by the 26-year-old Perez and 45-year-old Jamie Moyer.

Perez ran his scoreless streak against Philadelphia to 24 1-3 innings before Werth led off the seventh with a mammoth drive to center that hit the top tier of a camera tower. His 13th homer of the season tied it at 1 and was just the fourth earned run allowed by Perez in his last four starts.

Moyer retired eight of his first nine batters before running into trouble in the third, hurt by an uncharacteristic lapse in control. Jose Reyes walked with two outs and stole second. Moyer then walked rookie Nick Evans, and Wright lined his next pitch into left for an RBI single.

Moyer allowed one run and two hits in seven innings. He struck out six and walked three.

Notes

The Mets are expected to promote RHP Brandon Knight from Triple-A New Orleans to start against St. Louis on Saturday. Knight isnt expected to be with the club very long and should be able to compete for the U.S. in the Beijing Olympics. Moyer entered with just 34 walks in 120 innings this season. Jerry Manuel isnt sure when RHP Pedro Martinez will rejoin the team. Martinez was traveling to the Dominican Republic after the death of his father. Ryan Howard needs one more homer to become the third Phillies player to hit 30 or more in three consecutive seasons. Hall of Famers Chuck Klein and Mike Schmidt are the other two sluggers.
