I just got off the horn with the old man up in Manitowoc. One moment we're just chatting pleasantly away, when all of a sudden he goes "Fucking Bush." First I thought he wanted to talk politics, but apparently the score is now 3-2 Asstros.

Amazing. The Brew Crew pulls it out on yet another late-inning dinger - this time from Ryan Braun. Who is already signed to a long-term contract. Where the hell is the immortal Sal Bando when you need him?

I guess I'll away pull for the Brew Crew
in some way as that team's origins are
from Seattle.

MILWAUKEE (AP)Derrek Lee gave Milwaukee all the momentum. Reed Johnson just made sure Lee got a second chance.

Lee doubled with one out in the ninth to score Alfonso Soriano and the Chicago Cubs rallied to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 6-4 on Monday night to take a two-game lead in the NL Central.

The way weve been playing, we just needed a win. Period, Lee said. On the road, it makes it even better.

In the opener of a four-game series between the NLs top two teams, the Cubs prevailed in a back-and-forth contest to improve to 32-26 at Miller Parkalso known by Cubs fans as Wrigley Northsince it opened in 2001.

With the game tied at 4, Brewers closer Salomon Torres (5-3) struck out Kosuke Fukudome, but ran into trouble by walking Soriano and pinch hitter Mike Fontenot.

I wasnt able to execute, bottom line, Torres said.

Series at a Glance

  2. Tue, Jul 29 - 8:05 pm ET
  3. Wed, Jul 30 - 8:05 pm ET

Lee, who finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs, then flared a double to right, scoring Soriano. After an intentional walk to Aramis Ramirez and a strike out of Geovany Soto, Mark DeRosas infield single scored Fontenot to make it 6-4.

I just got two strikes and I was battling, I was just trying to get a sinker up and get the barrel on it, Lee said. It worked out. He left one up a little bit and I was able to stay inside it and hit it to right field.

Johnson did his part with a hard slide.

He came through in the seventh after walking to load the bases with one out. Brewers starter CC Sabathia forced Lee to ground weakly to Hardy, the shortstop, but Johnsons hard slide took out second baseman Rickie Weeks and Weeks errant throw allowed two to score to give the Cubs a 4-3 lead.

You try to beat the middle infielder to a spot, and I was able to get in there and get a good piece of him, Johnson said.

Said Weeks: I never got a hold of the ball really good, so I just tried to turn it. It just got away from me.

The Brewers tied the game at 4-4 with a solo homer by pinch hitter Russell Branyan with two outs in the seventh off Bob Howry. But they couldnt mount another comeback in the ninth against reliever Carlos Marmol, who picked up his fifth save after working around a two-out walk. Soriano made a jumping catch near the wall on Gabe Kaplers fly ball to deep left to end the game.

The Cubs took an early lead off Sabathia, the reigning AL Cy Young winner and the Brewers prized acquisition picked up in a trade with Cleveland before the All-Star break. Sabathia had started 4-0 in his first four starts with a 1.36 ERA in the NL, but the Cubs chipped away.

They were patient and I wasnt as pinpoint as I had been in my earlier starts, Sabathia said. Its the Dave Burba approach, if you dont got it, fake it. Do whatever I can to keep us in the game.

Soriano doubled, stole a base and then scored on Lees single in the first. The Cubs made it 2-0 when Soriano, who came off the disabled list on Wednesday, homered in the third, his 17th of the season and second in two days.

I swung the bat very good today, yesterday too. Hopefully it will continue tomorrow, he said.

Down 2-0, J.J. Hardy and Ryan Braun hit back-to-back homers off Cubs starter Ted Lilly. Milwaukee took the lead moments later when Prince Fielder singled and scored on Corey Harts double. Lilly had retired 13 of his previous 14 batters before the home runs.

The Brewers are trying to mimic what the Cubs did to them last season.

Chicago overcame an 8 1/2 -game deficit last June to win the division by two games over Milwaukee, and this year Chicagos biggest lead has been 8 1/2 games on June 16 only to have the Brewers catch the Cubs in the division Saturday before losing Sunday and again on Monday to fall two games back.

With the four-game series, both teams get to showcase their best pitchers, continuing Tuesday when NL All-Star starter Ben Sheets (10-3, 2.87 ERA) squares off against Cubs ace Carlos Zambrano (11-4, 2.96).

We won the first game of an important series, Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. And tomorrow weve got a nice pitching matchup between Sheets and Zambrano, two All-Star pitchers.

Notes

Reliever Chad Gaudin (2-1) earned the win with a scoreless eighth. Gaudin came with starter Rich Harden in a trade with Oakland on July 8 as part of a six-player deal. Brauns homer was his fifth in six days and team-leading 29th this season. It was Milwaukees eighth straight sellout, setting a Miller Park record, and 24th this season. The Brewers also are expected to sellout the three remaining games in the series. Chicago drew six walks against Milwaukee and lead the majors with 419 walks drawn this season.

MILWAUKEE (AP)Carlos Zambrano outpitched fellow ace Ben Sheets again, and the Chicago Cubs scored five runs in the sixth inning to beat Milwaukee 7-1 on Tuesday night, assuring theyll leave town leading the NL Central.

Zambrano (12-4) was brilliant in eight scoreless innings, striking out a season-high nine while scattering five hits and two walks to lift the Cubs to their sixth win in the last eight games in Milwaukee.

In a much-hyped series between the NLs top teams, Chicago pushed its division lead to three games and left the Brewers, losers of four of their last five, empty after pitching aces CC Sabathia and Sheets.

Chicago got to Sheets (10-4) with seven straight hits to start the sixth inning, sending 10 batters to the plate to break open a 1-0 game.

Derrek Lee singled and Aramis Ramirez, who had four hits, doubled to the wall to bring up struggling Kosuke Fukudome. He flared a ball to left field that Ryan Braun tried to catch with an ill-advised dive.

Series at a Glance

  1. Mon, Jul 28 - Final
  2. Tue, Jul 29 - Final
  3. Wed, Jul 30 - 8:05 pm ET
  4. Thu, Jul 31 - 2:05 pm ET

Braun, who doesnt have an error this year after committing 26 at third base last season, missed badly and the ball rolled to the wall, leaving Fukudome with a two-run triple.

Mark DeRosa singled through a drawn-in infield to make it 4-0 and Braun couldnt catch a soft fly ball by Mike Fontenot or make a play on a sharply hit one by Geovany Soto that loaded the bases.

Zambrano then hit a chopper to shortstop, but J.J. Hardys throw hit DeRosa in the back, scoring another run. Alfonso Sorianos sacrifice fly made it 6-0 and chased Sheets. Each team scored a run in the ninth for the final margin.

Zambrano, who followed Sheets to the mound in the All-Star game two weeks ago, clearly has the advantage head-to-head. In six matchups, Zambrano improved to 4-1.

Milwaukee, which has scored one run against Zambrano in the last 21 innings, failed to capitalize on its limited chances against the right-hander, putting just one runner on second against him.

In the second inning, Zambrano worked out of a two-on, none-out jam by freezing Russell Branyan with a changeup, overpowering Mike Cameron with a fastball and getting Jason Kendall, his former catcher, to ground out weakly.

Zambrano also worked around a leadoff single by Braun in the fourth and a leadoff walk by Cameron in the fifth.

Chicago, now 24-30 on the road, certainly has a home 90 miles north of Wrigley Field. The Cubs are seven games over .500 since Miller Park opened in 2001 and always have a large contingent of fans.

For the second straight night, Chicago struck first, too.

In the fourth, Ramirez, who finished 4-for-5, hit the first of his three doubles. Sheets uncorked a wild pitch that deflected off Kendall and put Ramirez on third, and DeRosa brought him in with a sacrifice fly moments later.

Zambrano also showed off his fiery emotions in the fifth. After Sotos leadoff single, Zambrano popped out on an attempted bunt and broke his bat by slamming it over his knee.

MILWAUKEE (AP)Ryan Dempster pitched seven superb innings, Ryan Theriot tripled to break open a close game and the Chicago Cubs once again beat the Milwaukee Brewers, winning 7-2 Wednesday night.

Alfonso Soriano and the Cubs will try for a four-game sweep Thursday. After arriving at Miller Park this week with a tenuous one-game edge over Milwaukee in the NL Central, Chicago now leads the Brewers and St. Louis by four games.

Dempster (12-4) struck out nine and gave up one run and five hits. He won consecutive road starts in the same season for the first time since 2001.

The All-Star warmed up for the eighth, but was pulled to get an ovation from the large Cubs contingent following the solid outings of Ted Lilly on Monday and ace Carlos Zambrano on Tuesday.

The Brewers have lost a season-high four straight at home. Chicago has handled Milwaukees top starters so far, getting the better of reigning AL Cy Young winner CC Sabathia on Monday, four-time All-Star Ben Sheets on Tuesday and emerging left-hander Manny Parra (9-4) on Wednesday.

Series at a Glance

  1. Mon, Jul 28 - Final
  2. Tue, Jul 29 - Final
  3. Wed, Jul 30 - Final
  4. Thu, Jul 31 - 2:05 pm ET

Soriano had three hits and two walks, and is now 6-for-12 in the series. Hes also scored five runs and stolen three bases, helping Chicago improve to 7-2 in its last nine at Miller Park.

Soriano got the Cubs going in this game, scoring in the first inning when Parra threw a wild pitch on a two-out strikeout.

The Cubs trailed only once in the series so far, erasing a two-run deficit on Monday in their next at-bat, while the Brewers best hitters have disappeared in the clutch, this time thanks to Dempster.

Up 2-1, the Cubs opened a comfortable lead in the sixth inning when Dempster and Alfonso Soriano singled before Theriots triple chased Parra.

After reliever Carlos Villanueva struck out Derrek Lee, Aramis Ramirez walked and the Cubs went ahead 5-1 on an RBI single by Reed Johnson. The Cubs added two more runs in the ninth.

Prince Fielder hit his 21st homer in the bottom of the inning for the final margin.

Again the Cubs struck first, even after a two-out strikeout. With runners on the corners in the first inning, Johnson fanned on a pitch that bounced in front of the plate and squirted through catcher Jason Kendall.

AP - Jul 30, 10:01 pm EDT

Johnson turned to walk back to the dugout before realizing what happened, but even with the late jump he managed to make first base after Fielder couldnt handle Kendalls throw.

Soriano scored on the play and made an emphatic safe call after watching Johnson reach first. Mark DeRosa followed by flaring RBI single.

Milwaukee cut it to 2-1 in the bottom of the first inning when Dempster made his only mistake by uncorking a wild pitch that scored Ray Durham, who had led off with a double and tagged up to reach third.

But the Brewers fell to 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position in the series and are 3-for-58 in the last eight games.

In the third, the Brewers first three hitters wasted Parras leadoff double. In the fifth, Parra tripled with two outs moments after Kendall was caught stealing after taking off from a small lead at first.

MILWAUKEE (AP)Jim Edmonds hit two homers, including a grand slam, and the Chicago Cubs finished off a four-game sweep of Milwaukee with an 11-4 rout on Thursday to extend their lead in the NL Central.

Just five days ago, the Cubs and Brewers were tied atop the division. After the sweep, the Brewers have lost five straight and are five games behind Chicago, which has won five straight.

The Cardinals began the day four games behind Chicago.

Rich Harden (1-1) picked up his first NL win, giving up a run and six hits in seven innings with nine strikeouts. He has yet to allow more than one run in any of his four starts since being traded to the Cubs.

Alfonso Soriano and Kosuke Fukudome also homered for the Cubs, who swept four games from the Brewers for the first time since 2003.

Edmonds provided all the offense needed after missing the previous three games because of a sore left knee. He led off the third with a homer to right to give the Cubs the lead. Chicago scored first in each game of the series, and outscored Milwaukee 31-11 in the series.

The Cubs improved to 8-2 at Milwaukee in the last two seasons.

Brewers starter Dave Bush (5-9) retired the first two batters in the fourth, but Aramis Ramirez walked, Fukudome doubled and Bush hit Mark DeRosa with an 0-2 pitch to bring up Edmonds.

The 38-year-old center fielder, who joined Chicago May 14, hit an opposite-field grand slam to left to make it 5-0. It was the seventh grand slam of his career and the 27th time hes hit two homers in a game.

Edmonds started the year with the San Diego Padres, hitting .178 in 26 games with one homer. He was released on May 9. After he cleared waivers, the Cubs signed him as a free agent on May 15.

Since then, Edmonds is hitting .277 with 12 homers in 155 at-bats.

Soriano added a solo homer and Fukudome hit a two-out, two-run shot in the eighth sandwiched around Ramirezs RBI double to make it 9-1.

The game nearly turned ugly in the ninth when Brewers reliever Eric Gagne threw behind Edmonds and was immediately ejected by home plate umpire Doug Eddings. Prince Fielder also was ejected in the bottom of the inning for arguing with Eddings.

Soriano finished the series 7-for-16 with two homers, three RBIs and three steals. The Cubs trailed just once in the series, and that was for one inning on Monday.

Milwaukee Brewers catcher Jason Kendall looks down as Chicago Cubs' Jim Edmonds (15) is congratulated by teammates Geovany Soto (18), Kosuke Fukudome (1) and Mark DeRosa (7) after hitting a grand slam during the fourth inning of a baseball game Thursday, July 31, 2008, in Milwaukee.

The Brewers have downplayed the much-hyped July series after initially calling it a dress rehearsal and a test for September and the playoffs.

Reigning AL Cy Young winner CC Sabathia and NL All-Star starter Ben Sheets couldnt beat Ted Lilly or Carlos Zambrano. Ryan Dempster pushed the Brewers to the brink of being swept Wednesday night with another strong effort, setting the stage for Harden.

The Brewers juggled their lineup Thursday, but it did little good against the righty, who allowed a solo homer to Fielder in the seventh before finishing his afternoon by striking out Jason Kendall, his former catcher in Oakland.

The Brewers snapped an 0-for-20 streak with runners in scoring position with Mike Camerons one-out RBI single in the ninth. Bill Hall added a two-out, two-run double.

The two teams will meet six times in the final 12 games, including the final three games of the regular season at Miller Park.
