The best screw-up moments are the ones that, somehow, turn out ok, even if they were a little exciting while you were doing them. Then, when its over, you think, I am NEVER going to try that again.

You know, Cy, that is so true...You couldnt have put it into words any better...

Case in point:

We have this loaded rock train that is a bitch to run...Short and heavy (i.e 10K tons and only 3K ft) Most of the dedicated rock trains have 5 old SD-45's on the lead...Great power!

However, this one particular train has a new Dash 9, an old SD-40-2 on the head end and a Dash 9 on the rear as a DP....Worthless combination for runnin through the hills....Constantly usin air and will run away on you in a heartbeat...

There are some guys out here that run every DP train synched and Im not a big fan of that....But one time, I decided to try it through this one area that has two rolling hills....Much like a roller coaster....I shouldve known better...

I made it through the first hill fine when my conductors pen fell on the floor...He went down to grab it and as I yelled to him, "Hang on, R!" The slack came in like a sonofabitch and knocked him right on his ass....It was one of the hardest run ins I ever had....I felt llike a moron and was telling him how I was tryin somethin out but wont attempt it again....

I can only compare that run in as being stopped on the highway and someone slammin into you at 55mph.....I learned my lesson...

I had them synched and was in the process of runnin away from the ass end when the DP came over the hill in run 6...Head end was startin back up hill...The shitty Jack I had wouldnt load fast enough and the DP sent all 80 cars runnin in....These werent gons that the rock was loaded in...Kind of a small open hopper type car....Much shorter than a gon but much taller....

This area was 1% up and 1% down times 2 hills.....Really long, wavy hills....

Running a duped train on that kind of territory I like to pull up the fence and run it bunched. I also use the fence to bunch a long train into a short siding. Of course the UP doesnt want us to use the fence MORANS!
