Railroader marks 105th birthday

(The following report appeared on the KETV website on June 29, 2010.)

OMAHA, Neb. A group of retired Union Pacific workers got together Tuesday morning near downtown Omaha to catch up, which is usual -- but this time they were celebrating an unusual birthday.

One of the group's members, Ed Haworth has celebrated his birthday 104 times before. Tuesday was the 105th.

Haworth doesnt turn 105 until Thursday, but the coffee and eggs meeting at Joe Banana's was nonetheless special.

"In the railroad, they started with little bitty steam engines, then went to big steam engines, then from there, the streamliners," Haworth said.

Haworth worked for 44 years and is still enjoying a 40-year retirement. Someone asked him what he's been doing since 1970.

"Not much. Spending my money -- now I'm about broke," Haworth quipped.

He's armed with a lifetime of memories.

"I lived on a farm until I was 19, and we left the farm and came back to Council Bluffs in 1922, I believe it was," he said.

He has sage advice.

"Well, just stay away from doctors and take vitamins instead of medicine," he said.

Haworth's first wife died in 1985 after 53 years of marriage. He married his second wife in 1997.

He'll mark his actual birthday on Thursday with a party in Council Bluffs.
