Wrong-way cyclist collides with UP train

(The following story by Eva Ruth Moravec appeared on the San Antonio Express-News website on August 22, 2010.)

SAN ANTONIO, Texas A bicyclist is recovering after colliding with a train Friday night on the city's East Side.

Police said Levi Smith, 47, had been drinking and around 11:15 p.m., he rode around railroad crossing arms in the 400 block of Burnet Street, just east of U.S. 281, where the train hit him.

Raquel Espinoza-Williams, a Union Pacific spokeswoman, said a snow plow in the front of the locomotive struck Smith. The impact caused him to be flung off the tracks, which may have saved his life, she said.

The crossing is equipped with flashing lights, gates and bells. Although the intersection is located in a quiet zone, where honking the horn isn't required, the railroad crew did so anyway to alert Smith, officials said.

A police spokesman said Smith may face charges, including public intoxication and trespassing.

He was taken to Brooke Army Medical Center in serious condition. Officials couldn't confirm his medical status Sunday.

The crew will probably be charged with not sounding the horn soon enough in an emergency situation.

Or the download will show that they were 1 mph overspeed going out of the yard when thier trip began, showing they were a reckless crew.

I hope tu kryst they were wearing their PPE, and that the units were dailyed. Otherwise they would be charged with attempted murder.

I noticed that the article didn't say that the conductor sounded the horn or applied the brakes. What a slacker...

People when you buy a bike ensure its one you can handle and get real familiar with it fast. Today I was heading to town and cruising at the speed limit on a 2 lane road, lo behold I look up and here is a car topping a hill and passing 3 cars and there is no shoulder of the road, to the chagrin of some members here and on another forum, I got the bike stopped and in the grass on the shoulder.....The guy didn't break stride...but on a side note the bike and I were unhurt and came outa the ditch and passed those same 3 cars and got the guy and his license plates and his house addy and the sheriff arrived

The speed recorder on the 2nd unit was 2 mph fast.....
