CANADIAN PACIFIC PREPARED TO FULLY OPERATE THE RAILWAY REGARDLESS OF OUTCOME OF BARGAINING WITH CAW
CALGARY, Jan. 13, 2011 (Canada NewsWire via COMTEX) -- Canadian Pacific (tsx/nyse:CP) today advised that it has trained 1,200 managers and has a comprehensive contingency plan in place to fully operate the railway should a labour dispute occur with the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW), with the earliest possible date being February 8, 2011.
At Canadian Pacific, this union represents mechanical services employees who inspect and repair rail cars and locomotives. The CAW represents no other employees at CP.
The company has a long history of cooperative labour relations and working through key issues with the unions representing our employees.
Negotiations are ongoing. The company remains optimistic for a negotiated settlement.

I always think back to the BRAC strike of 1978. They claimed that they ran the trains without incident and all that we saw piled up here and there and stories we heard of mistakes made were without any validity. Nothing but professional railroaders, entirely out of their element, running trains.

Ya, I can see a Trainmaster out there inspecting cars and Locomotives to FRA Specs. They are gonna have the Hawgs inspect the power in the yard, and just have a couple Managers trained how to fuel and sand the units. Time ta stand with our mechanical brothers and shop everything we see. FUK 'EM!!

When the hoggers went on strike at the CN up here a couple of years ago, they had managers running the trains with unionized conductors. There were 2 incidents here locally with hoggers going out onto the mainline with out Daily operating bullitins and General operation bullitins. The conductors in both incidents were fired because they did'nt check to see if the hogger had his appropreiate paperwork. The conductors, only recently got their jobs back, and Transport Canada fined the CN, who appealed in both cases, and the cases are still being reviewed. There are some interesting stories on Runningtrades.com concerning incidents during the strike
