Canadian National conductors, brakemen sign off on subsidiary merger

CHICAGO  Canadian National conductors and brakemen working between Chicago and the Canadian border at Ranier, Minn., have ratified a single contract for the whole district. The agreement gives CN flexibility at its Superior, Wis., terminal, where previous agreements limited where conductors and brakemen could work.

CN proposed merging its Wisconsin Central; Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range; and Duluth, Winnipeg & Pacific subsidiaries in June. The Surface Transportation Board approved the deal pending labor acceptance.

Under the new agreement, conductors and brakemen from all three predecessors will be able to work all of CNs main lines radiating from Superior. The deal still awaits ratification by the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers & Trainmen, which represents CNs engineers in the corridor.

What this article doesn't tell you is that it passed 121 to 118 on the WC side with 85 lazy apathetic motherfuckers not voting.  This contract has enough gray in it to paint an aircraft carrier twice.

Meanwhile, LINTCO and the BLET are going to arbitration.

How would this 'agreement,' if ratified by BLE-T and LINTCO affect you?
Reassignment? Systemwide seniority? Bumped? Forced onto extra board job?

Sounds like some of that grey may splash onta you regardless...

There are a lot of questions that are answered with just a shrug and a dumb look. There is talk of terminal protection for the former Peg and Missabe boys but nothing for us redheads. There are approx 110 engineers on the DMIR/DWP in superior vs 30 on the WC. I doubt that the engineers in Gladstone MI, Fon Du Lac WI, etc. would be even remotely affected by this whereas the 30 in Suptown are becoming extremely nervous.

That's an interesting answer, BD, one that's sure to improve your attitude.

Snippy's answer is contained in the BJ.com archives.

After searching through the archives looking for Snippy's concise and succinct answer, Cy gave up. Cy hopes that Burning Journal-types don't get burned.

I'd expect BD's attitude may not be improved any time soon, especially with that noose hanging over his head

Snippy's answer was along the lines of "if you have a home, it's worth it (just about anything) to arrange the life change to be able to stay there." AFHTs suck.

What about 'dovetailing' seniority? Will this agreement allow for that? When BN closed Denver Diesel fer instance, Interbay inherited 21 bodies, along with (6300 series SD 40's) power... The grunts came to us with their seniority, and every craft was meshed into ours... Out of the 21, three (3) are still at Interbay.

Dave and two electricians! Amazing! But operating rules of LINTCO may be different, and mechanical forces from the two big Canuck outfits work together at the Vancouver Diesel shops... Not merged, but a practical agreement of CAW contracts.

Dovetails are mostly frowned upon by the Home Team. The Home Team wakes up one morning with less seniority. And no home. Team.

Dove tail would op worked well here in Philly. Home team was all worried about their yard jobs. Home teams yard job is gone, so now they have Seniority over Ikea parking lot. Home team chased off road jobs because LC didn't want to cover it, LC is gone, home team holding their dicks now because they are behind away teams prior rights on the road jobs that was picked up going north.

Ha! Freddie doesn't really care because Freddie was hired after split date. Freddie went to become the Sec/Treasurer of away teams brandy new Division, since Freddie likes to hang with the more intelligent types.

Home team here was worried about the invasion of hoards of ex-Con types that would come riding in and take away everything. You would have thought that Genghis Khan or Atilla the Hun was coming, there would be a dust cloud sighted on the horizon, followed by mass pillaging and raping, the whole place would have been sacked, and that would have been that. Because this was about 100 miles from the nearest CR terminal and most who had left here pursuing their jobs had long ago moved, it didn't happen. I think that today there is exactly one ex-Con HAWG working in this terminal and he was a latter day hire who was sent right straight to engine service very shortly after he hired out, much like our good buddy, FMB. That irritates those who followed him and had to wait at least a year, per LAMCO requirements, to go to McDonald's, err, McDonough.

Actually, as it turned out, the home team had more to be concerned about from each other, seniority was divided here before and now is dovetailed and so there are now individuals working where they never had rights before, negatively affecting those who may have held those jobs before or who would be holding them now if not for a person from the other side now working it.

OTOH, down in the QCOTW, those who went to the competition and had been lifelong stay-at-home types, found themselves working road jobs for the competition, much, very much to their chagrin, and soon regretted their decision to go to the competition. They thought they would be working in Q-gate but the way the seniority was done for them didn't permit this.

I guess you just never know for sure, the above is based on observation and what I was told, I haven't a lot of first-hand knowledge of the QCOTW events. Perhaps our observer on the scene can chime in with what he knows .

BlackDog will likely take a wait 'n' see attitude for the time being. After all he's with LINTCO, and may be able ta stay with priors on WC property. Then again with LINTCO grabbin' up all the smaller fish, and regionals...

BD knows best!
