Our oldest flagman is going to retire the first of the year.  An engineer who bid on the ground. His only hobby is smoking fine cigars.  He took the $10,000 bonus to stay on till the end of the year, since this company realized they are loosing engineers at an alarming rate.

 

Up North, engineers are bailing left and right to head to Amtrak and all the commuter railroads.  Brownshirt is wondering why?????

He has been on the ground for a few years now. Long term flagman jobs on the Trenton Line. His wife is some big shot in Amtrak, he got alot of money in the Conrail deal when he was a boss.

His problem is, is that he has no life or interest other than the RR.

Is he past retirement age? Just wondering. Guys that don't retire are afraid, I think, they'll go home and drop dead. Sometimes, they do. Most can't wait to get away from the foolishness but there's some who can't imagine life without it. No foolishness is better.

No doubt, Andy Rooney having retired at 92 and then promptly checking out will influence the oldest flagman's decision to retire. Or not.

Uke, the answer is NO. NO. NO. NO. NO. NO. All that increasing load of nonsense and foolishness that some idiot with little or no practical experience sitting in a room somewhere devises is no longer my concern.

Another old flagman's last day was yesterday. A nut, but he was our nut. Evidently he got hooked up with a rich woman from Florida. There is hope for UKE.

Years ago, long before the Internet or anything like it, mid seveties, we had a BOT retire and promptly marry and move to Mexico City.  Within 18 months, he was back in town (the town where loving picnic tables exist), saying he couldn't speak Spanish and things just weren't as great in Mexico City as what he had thought they would be. 

Before he left, it was all about how great it was going to be and how far his pension would go in Mexico and he could live with servants, like a king.  I guess living like a king wasn't all it was cranked up to be.
