Railfanning Soldier Summit in Sept 1994. Had a great day with my video

camera. It was just one train after another at the summit. So on the way

back down the hill I snapped a shot of this DRGW Eastbound. Well this

"5531" F45 in a Santa Fe paint scheme has been a bugger for me to

find anything on it. "5531" doesn't fit with ATSF numbers for F45's.

The biggest clue is that "red circle" on the side in blue paint.

Doesnt show up on the Utah Railroad roster either even though they

bought 3-4 ex-BN F45's. I've checked many of the loco leasing companies

and nada. So "team of experts" let me know what you find.

Looks like, to Snippy, that you caught quite a rare bird in transit......

Preservation

The ex-F45 lodge at the Izaak Walton Inn.

Revelstoke Limited LLC purchased a former Santa Fe F45 in June 2008 and restored it externally as Great Northern 441 (GN's last F45 was 440); it was the first locomotive in 40 years to be painted in GN's Big Sky Blue colors. It has been converted to a Luxury Locomotive Lodge at the Izaak Walton Inn at Essex, Montana. It arrived at Essex on August 26, 2009, and became available for lodging in January 2010. The interior can sleep up to four people and includes a living room, kitchen, master bedroom and bath. The cab has been restored to the current BNSF Railway specification for new and remanufactured locomotives. It is believed to be the only locomotive in the world that has been converted to living space available for rent. The locomotive was originally built as Santa Fe 1910, later 5910, later 5960, built by EMD in June 1968, serial number 34046. More recently it was Morrison-Knudsen 5531, then Utah Railway 9013.

I cant believe it. I've been looking through 100's of Train
Magazines lately hoping to find an issue on Kansas City.
So what do I find in the October 1995 issue of Trains
Magazine but a snapshot of my F45 in Utah Railroad
grey/red paint number 9013. Santa Fe 5960 sold to MK
and renumbered "5531". That was such a short-lived
number "5531". I searched the internet rosters for this
loco but apparently not enough time at MK. MK sucked
it in and spit it out and I just happen to catch it on
film.

Had this link sitting waiting ta post, but for whatever reason, it was forgotten... And yet, there's still a few clues. I worked on more'n one of the Santa Fe 45s, both 'cowl,' and carbody units leftover from the pre-merger daze...

They weren't assigned to Interbay, but found their way in anyway, usually off Pasco bounds outa California, or Oregon. We'd get 'em for heavy repair work, traction motors, rewheel, aux-gen swaps, electrical upgrades...

Rarely the damn things were lead units, but on occasion crews would be forced ta run from an F-45... From what I knew...toadstool seats weren't favored over 'normal' humanitarian seats!

But I digress:http://atsf.railfan.net/cowls/f45.html

Great pics, and a roster of units and disposition post merger with BN...
