I took this shot while touring Nebraska in 1991. I take shots of anything

and this was "way down the list" of my priorities but was still included

in my pack of pics. So 20+ years later I'm thinking of posting this picture

of this quirkly little switcher sitting in the Nebraska winds and I dont

know where to start as to what kind of loco it is and this "SWEPCO"

above the "1101" and in BN paint. I had to ascertain what "SWEPCO"

was in the first place. Of course no AAR reporting marks contain more

than 4 letters so "SWEPCO" is not its reporting mark. "SWEPCO" is

"Southwestern Electric Power Company" and its AAR reporting marks

are "SEPX" but anyone that has posted a picture of this loco so far has

not figured it out yet. The little switcher is a very unique build. Previously

own by the CNW and later the BN took them in. BN 1100-1101 hung

around Minneapolis during the early 1980's. The "GE SL-144" is a very

rare unit.

Damn, I remember seeing those little guys when I was a kid. Somewhere in my piles of treasures I have a picture of those 2 little critters in South St. Paul in CNW paint.

My former power company has a locomotive? Why? And what the fuck is up with the trucks on that thing?

You are right...CNW 1198 and 1199. Rare thing for class 1 railroad to buy

"dinky" switchers during this timeframe. Any kind of switcher like this is

doing work inside a plant/industrial type of switching now. Well shuttling

hoppers cars around seems like a good second occupation. The unit still

lives last I checked.

First thought... ALCO C-415. Nope! Remember that SP&S had a couple...used 'em as yard goats somewhere down south, Oregon, or Cali swithing lumber...

Nope. Looked further... Came ta this page:http://www.railpictures.net/showphotos.php?locomotive=GE%20SL144

Being a former wrench, I wonder what lived under the hood(s)? GE liked Cummins engines, although IF they're still running at all...maybe CATs...

I managed to catch-up with the BN C-415's when they were
retired and get some good shots of them. Growing up north
of Seattle on the ex-GN line to Vancouver BC, there was a
zero chance any of these ex-SPS units getting up to Bham...
until the BN Merger in 1970. The "Fern-Turn" (Interbay to
Ferndale and return) was the only train that wasn't going into
Canada and therefore could use any power on it at Interbay.
So just about every evening for a several years the
Fern Turn was the one to watch. Just about all the ex-SPS
ALCO's (except for the C-636's) and ex-NP ALCO's made a
run to Ferndale. I managed just one shot of a C-415 passing
through Bellingham and it is "out-of-focus". I really dont want
to post it but it's a tiny bit of proof however badly I executed
the shooting of the picture.

Really odd ducks the C-415s from ALCO... Probably their answer ta EMD's BL-1 and -2. Similar weight/ponies, etc. And switching ends...not a problem!
