4 people are dead and 17 people have been transported to a hospital from the accident.

MIDLAND, Texas A freight train slammed into a parade float carrying wounded veterans on Thursday, killing four people and injuring 17 others as the float crossed a West Texas railroad crossing on its way to an honorary banquet, authorities said.

The eastbound train was sounding its horn before it hit the float around 4:40 p.m. in Midland, Union Pacific spokesman Tom Lange said. A preliminary investigation indicates the crossing gate and lights were working at the time, Lange said, though he didn't know if the train crew saw the float approaching.

Two people died at the scene of the crash, while two others died at Midland Memorial Hospital, City of Midland spokesman Ryan Stout said. Ten of those injured are in critical condition, while the other seven are in stable condition, he said.

"There is going to be a very thorough investigation," Lange said. "It's obviously a very tragic incident."

The parade was to end at a "Hunt for Heroes" banquet honoring the veterans. The wounded service members were then going to be treated to a deer-hunting trip this weekend. The events have been canceled.

Midland Police Chief Price Robinson said the Union Pacific train struck an open trailer that was carrying veterans and their spouses.

"It's hard to look at. It's a very tragic event, very unfortunate," Robinson said, speaking from the site of the accident.

Lange said Union Pacific is offering help to the community and victims' families, as well as peer-to-peer counseling for the train crew, who did not sustain any injuries.

The National Transportation Safety Board also is investigating, NTSB spokesman Peter Knudson said.

The parade kicked off a weekend of events, including the banquet and a hunting expedition, to honor wounded veterans, Cleere said. Those events have now been canceled.

"It has been a horrible thing," he said. "The people in Midland that were hosting the banquet tonight are in a state of shock."

Many of the 25 West Texas veterans being honored served multiple deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to biographies posted on a website created by event organizers. They were described as having been shot on the battlefield or wounded by improvised explosive devices.

Some described suffering traumatic brain injuries and post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of their deployments, the online biographies said.

Tracy Scott, a Midland oilfield worker who did not witness the crash but arrived at the scene later, told Reuters the train did not derail, but continued to move roughly half a mile past where the collision occurred before coming to a stop.

Photos posted on the website of The Midland Reporter-Telegram showed a double-decker freight train stopped at the road crossing, with debris scattered around a flatbed trailer and chairs in disarray after tumbling off the parade float. Each chair had the name of a veteran below it.

A second flatbed truck carrying soldiers and spouses cleared the train tracks without being struck, police said.

Some of those aboard the trailer that was hit managed to jump off before the collision, police added.

Authorities did not immediately release names of those injured or killed.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

You've got to wonder how this happened. And I really hate myself for having this thought pop into my head but was there a secessionist at the wheel? Awful.

Snippy is hoping that there is nothing buried on page 33 in that train crew's dispatcher bulletins about a parade or a slow order sandwiched in between the items about stretching exercises and hydration and pee color.

What it all comes down to is who owns that pretty orange truck, and who was driving it.

I'll bet anything that there are some rules and regulations drafted for parade floats,  (If none exist)

What was holding those folding chairs on the deck of the trailer...tie down straps??

With a nod to Snippy, nothing happens in the local communities round here that we dont get a bulletin on,

slow down, ring bell, sound horn, look out for people on the tracks...

Its hard ta believe that this could happen.

Yes, we'd get those messages on our bulletins, train orders, whatever, but I remember a couple of times we'd just get a call on the radio and remember once stopping a parade no one knew about.  No, no notifications of any kind.

Although RRRS* is long in the past, it was like that going all the way back to train order days in the '70s. Homecoming, Main Street Daze, Manasshole Re-enactors.....

There is a town called Gordon about 30 miles of Buckethead land, the tracks go by the east side of a ballfield on a fill, it's a natural stadium seating for the 4th of July fireworks. There have been several years where LINTCO never notified the crews or did anything about the townsfolk using the tracks. I know of several crews screaming around the curve only to have a wave of humanity scattering before them. LINTCOs attitude was "They're trespassing, they shouldn't be there in the first place." I am truly surprised that no one has been killed there yet.

The city of Seattle has a park adjacent to 2LARRCO's rails called "Golden Gardens" which has seen numerous deaths over the past few years... Some are suicides of course, but many, many more have been unintentional.

The railroad, and the city fenced it off on both sides...but people who use the park, saw it as an invasion of their rights ta trespass, or use the rails...for whatever they chose...

Years before the fences...there was the footbridge crossing. That structure allowed direct access to the beach (salt water), and sandy side from the grassy, treed park.

Check it out:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Gardens_Park

BD, I'd forgotten about St. Marys, Ohio, where the high school football stadium backs up on the tracks, also around a curve, also a scene of much excitement a few times. However, now that it's Wes' good budy, R. J. Corman's road, probably not a thing for the locals to worry about.

There was a Marathon run yesterday thru Harpers Ferry. Had the Railroad shut down for hours.

Amtrak 30 opened the RR back up. After 30 went thru then they started running freight again.

Two trains sat at Hobbes, and 1 train sat at West Cumbo for over 3 1/2 hours.

Overtime was had by all.

Has anyone seen a story that discusses or names the driver? Or was it remotely controlled? Yeah, that must be it.

MIDLAND, Texas -- Warning signals at a railroad crossing activated before a parade float pulled in front of an oncoming train and the resulting crash killed four veterans, federal investigators said Saturday.

National Transportation Safety Board member Mark Rosekind said at a news conference that the warning signals were activated before the float pulled onto the track.

The train slammed into the flatbed trailer carrying veterans and their spouses during a parade in their honor on Thursday, killing four vets and injuring 16 people injured. Hundreds attended a vigil in Midland Saturday night for the victims.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rosekind gave this timeline of the crash, The Associated Press said, based on review of video from the train and a sheriff's vehicle that was behind the trailer:
20 seconds before collision: Bells and lights activated as first tractor trailer is safely crossing the tracks
13 seconds before: Gates start to descend
12 seconds before: Front of the second tractor trailer starts crossing in front of the train
9 seconds before: Train starts sounding its horn
5 seconds before: Train engineer uses emergency brake

The collision killed Marine Chief Warrant Officer 3 Gary Stouffer, 37; Army Sgt. Maj. Lawrence Boivin, 47; Army Sgt. Joshua Michael, 34; and Army Sgt. Maj. William Lubbers, 43.

Investigators on Monday will conduct a "sight distance test" to understand what the train engineer and the driver of the truck that was struck might have seen before the collision, Rosekind said.

"You know there was a lot of activity going on with other noises going on," Rosekind said.

Robert Accetta, lead NTSB investigator on the crash, said his team had not yet interviewed the driver. "We don't know what the driver may or may not have seen," he said.

NTSB officials declined to identify the driver or the company that owned the truck.

The crash in Midland occurred during a "Show of Support" parade that was to kick off a weekend of events to salute U.S. veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Some veterans and their spouses aboard the float jumped off to escape the collision in the seconds before it happened.

Pam Shoemaker, who was riding in the float that crossed the tracks ahead of the one that was struck, said earlier this week she saw a railroad crossing bar come down just before the crash.

The initial reports said that the driver was a young soldier from Fort ?Bliss?? who was wearing his uniform out of respect to the veterans he was hauling. They did name him.

The short (less than 15 seconds on the horn) is OK for the engineer because they were in a quiet zone.
