Five best states for seniors to stay healthy and the five worst ones

Minnesota is the best state for seniors to stay healthy while Mississippi is the worst, according to a new survey released Wednesday.

The study, commissioned by UnitedHealth Group Inc.s UNH +0.42% United Health Foundation, looked at nearly three dozen data points on issues including the strength of drug coverage, availability of home health-care workers, food supply and even such matters as the rate of dental visits.

Minnesota ranked far ahead of other states Vermont placed second with strong showings in a number of other categories such as a high percentage of seniors who report good health, low rate of hip fractures, low premature death rates and fewer poor mental health days per month.

Third on the list was New Hampshire, followed by Massachusetts and Iowa.

Conversely, Mississippi was in the bottom five in 14 of the 34 measures studied, placing last in annual dental visits and ranking low in number of seniors in poverty, low food supplies, lower reported good health, low number of able-bodied seniors and a high premature death rate.

Next to last on the list was Oklahoma, followed by Louisiana, West Virginia and Arkansas.

Lest anyone think that the study reflects hometown favoritism from UnitedHealth, based in suburban Minneapolis, spokeswoman Lauren Mihajlov says that an outside firm, Arundel Street Consulting, conducted the examination using data from several agencies of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Commerce and Department of Labor. Data also came from the Dartmouth Atlas Project, National Foundation to End Senior Hunger, Brown University, American Geriatics Society and the Commonwealth Fund.

She adds that a nine-member scientific committee, with only two of its members affiliated with UnitedHealth, oversaw the study.

Minnesota placed fifth in an earlier study commissioned by the foundation that examines overall health rankings of states. That study was completed in 2012 and put Vermont at the top of the list.
