Easy there, podner. This is the day they made grey from green and red just 31 years ago when Snippy and *cy* were already veteran railroaders.

Anyway, the Horse did a good thing today. What these guys are able to do on their bikes is amazing.....

BTW, find the GREEN shirt in the middle. (Only one.) The new replacement Wick is the second blue shirt to the right of Mayor Green Shirt.

NS Cycling Team? Led by Mixmaster Mark?

Snippy, you know what today is and it has nothing to do with veterans or cycling teams. Wonder how many (rail) veterans are left who were working on that day for their respective teams thirty-one years ago?

Funny... I pulled my older than old ten/twelve speed bike outa storage couple days ago... New bike shop over by the Chinese joint, took it in for service/repairs, and a cable, or two... Watching the clips of the Vets "Ride to Recovery" got me thinking...

Gotta go in next week... Probably three weeks, June 10th-till... PTSD program follow up. Shit that causes nightmares, sleep problems, negative thoughts ... And dealing with diabetes.

But back to the topic, riding bicycles. Hope ta start again... Ain't been on it, that bike I bought new in '79 in Spokane, when I was an apprentice on BN... Rode with my journeyman, and a couple other guys every day to the shop and home. Pat and I lived the furthest from Hillyard back then ten, twelve miles...one way!

Wore out one set of tires, then got furloughed from the diesel shop...

Time ta give bicycling a whirl!

Yeah, *cy*. You got it. Lost me on SLM....

It was supposed to be, 'find the GREEN shirt in the center of the picture, then, second blue shirt to the right'. Snippy's gone blind in one eye and deaf in the other.

But, you still guessed it. Mr. Squires has been officially identified. He has quite a 'Wickkan' personality.

Getting that locomotive to right train, right time all in a short time was the private work of Mixmaster Mark. R2R has a new big friend.

Wick doesn't have a bicycle?

Who is that, sort of resembles how I remember SLM looking, that *@&$)%^$&@*(. Surely not him, though.

Hmm, just thinking out loud, the exercise in riding that bike might help all of those symptoms. Getting physically tired is better than mentally tired. Shuts the head down....

Snippy, is he from SOUTHERN New Hampshire, at least?

Norfolk Southern Corp. announced Friday that one of its executive vice presidents, James A. Squires, has been promoted to president, making him the No. 2 executive of the Norfolk-based railroad. He'll start the new job June 1.

Squires, 51, had been executive vice president for administration since August and before that had served for five years as executive vice president for finance.

He takes over the role of president from CEO Wick Moorman, who also retains the title of chairman. Squires will oversee Norfolk Southern's administration, finance, law and corporate relations, and planning and information technology divisions. Moorman, 61, will oversee the railroad's marketing and operations.

"Jim is a forward-thinking railroader and a well-tested leader," Moorman said. "As president, he will ensure that Norfolk Southern stays at the forefront of strategic planning, innovation and financial performance."

Frank Brown, a Norfolk Southern spokesman, said Squires' promotion does not mean that he has been designated as Moorman's successor when Moorman reaches mandatory retirement at age 65. "Only the board can elect a CEO," Brown said.

Moorman himself became president in 2004 and added the titles of CEO a year later and chairman two years later as David Goode stepped aside.

According to his bio on Norfolk Southern's website, Squires joined the company in 1992 and served in several law positions before being named vice president for law in 2003, senior vice president for law in 2004 and senior vice president for financial planning in 2006.

He's a native of Hollis, N.H., and has degrees from Amherst College and the University of Chicago.

Uke, their PTSD therapy dogs accompany them. YoUke probably would be a dog's best friend. God was named by a dyslexic and it has left many generations of confused worshippers.

If you decide to re-cycle, Snippy encourages you to. It's the best thing going. Old skool 10-speeds are great bikes, but you may be surprised how much things have changed for the better on newer bikes. No matter what you do, the best bike won't do anything without a good motor. Work on the motor. Just Ride.

  1. Proper fit is everything. At the very least, make sure that the height of your saddle allows your knee to almost straighten out at the bottom of the pedaling stroke. If you can't do this, you're on the wrong bike. A too small frame is probably worse than one too large.
  2. It's a saddle, not a seat. The whole idea is to distribute weight on your pedals, weight on your bars, and weight on your saddle. Your ass hurts because you haven't figured that shit out and think your saddle is an easy chair and you aren't wearing the right shorts. Distribute your weight. Remember this. Get a pair of bike shorts. (Bibs are best, but Snippy understands.)
  3. Have good brakes. Good ones are like driving a car with excellent brakes (that's probably not true on an old skool ten speed). If you try your brakes and they're dicey, at least get new, properly adjusted pads on the front wheel of your old bike. The front brake is always your priority brake, but yoUke already know that. Yeah, it's on the left side in the USA. It makes no sense, but that's the way it is. Snippy used to switch his, but doesn't these days because of owning several bikes.
  4. Wear glasses. Your Interbay friends can get you a good pair that will have a good temple on them well-suited for the next mandate. YoUke may already have a pair.
  5. Clip a mirror on your glasses. (Snippy recommends the Take-A-Look® shorty.) Learn how to use it. Never leave it behind, even on dedicated trails. Old fuckers aren't flexible enough to glance back over their left shoulder without pulling left into traffic and/or overcorrecting right into the death curb or ditch. Handlebar mirrors are OK, but not great. You already look goofy, don't let yourself think that the goofy eyeglass mirror puts it over the top.
  6. Wear high viz shirts. Snippy is no fan of anything else unless you are on a rail trail.

Ride.

Awaiting the return of the 'old-skool' bike... Just walked 4-1/2 miles... I will stay on the dedicated bike trail for now (Once it's been serviced, etc.), as it runs all the way downtown away from traffic. Dedicated bicycle trail... Eventually will venture out further onto other connections. But for now...waiting! And walking!

The short connectors (Arterials), and regular city streets seem reasonably well marked, and most drivers here are courteous enough ta give bikes a break/brake. The ONE good thing the current mayor has done for Seattle is extend and improve bike trails.

Not without controversy of course, but he has done a few things right. The really long(est) bike trail passes the Uke hide-out, and runs all the way down to the waterfront! Back the other direction, past the car shop, roundhouse, along the ship canal, past the north end of Lake Union, and Lake Washington, along an old NP ROW through Lake Forest Park...all the way to Kenmore.

Probably more'n 20 miles...or more! It connects to other bikeways... North of Seattle, but where... Not Ukeville!
