BNSF EMD GP-60B's
Permalink

I caught some of the EMD GP-60 test runs

on the BN with the cab units. The "GP-60B's"

were Sante Fe's liking of the idea of a

cabless GP-60 in silver and red paint to

run all the "Super C" trains of the Sante Fe.

I guess it must have worked for a while.

If you need to get a train across country

"for sure" you put a bunch of dash-9 GE's

on your train. So the GP-60B's were a hit

for while in mainline service and now many

have ended up in the GPNW doing local

service. The GPNW has many branchlines

that require the Geep and so we have always

been on the "last-stop" in many locomotive

careers. And so it seems with the rare GP-60B

unit of which only 23 were built. Not sure exactly

how many are assigned here but I got pictures

some of them. BNSF took the time to re-paint

them so I think they will be around for a while.

Brought a couple of 'em back ta life in the past couple years. Inspected top ta bottom. Restarted more'n one after refilling damn near everything that took oil, or water...

Did a few repairs, and modifications. That 333 was putting out close ta 3600 ponies! It has the big 16-cyl. 710 engine, the big alternator/rectifier, and fast motors/gearing, which most of 'em had from the factory at La Grange when they were new.

The damn things ougta have been derated though, with D-78 motors under 'em for "local" service. They were built for high-speed service, not local drags. Local management (Interbay) now runs SD-60s as well in local service tu.

Another waste of good, mainline units! Then again that's my opinion, which doesn't count for shit with BNSF now!

Ya musta caught those GP-60-Bs at Everett Krink... Haven't been by Interbay in a while to see 'em. Although that's probly where they're maintained as locals.

A few more factoids from Wikipedia just in case:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EMD_GP60

Everett is becoming the "new Interbay" Uke. I mean there
can be 20-25 units sitting around the Delta Yard engine
tracks from time to time. I seen on a Saturday locomotives
parked everywhere. What makes Everett the new Interbay
is what I'd call the BNSF's solution for getting trains through
the most congested corridor of train traffic between Tacoma/
Auburn thru Seattle and to Everett. I've heard the train crews
refered to a "K-crew" which must be "new pool" of train
crews that just run the horrible "gauntlet" through Seattle
and must spend a lot of time in crew shuttles. So Everett
has really developed into a "new position" of importance.
I cant believe all the new "out-buildings" and trailers that
are offices and just a huge development of the whole
facility. BNSF Delta yard is busy all the time and full all the
time. Train leaves Delta Yard leaving 2-tracks clear.
Next inbound train lands in those 2-clear tracks.
Trains often held out of Everett on sidings up the Bham Sub
and they die. There's a whole lot of crew-shuttling going every
day around Everett. But for sure Everett has become the new
"launch point" for trains going north/south/east.

What a surprise... Everett hardly registered down here. Now ya say it's the "launch point" for damn near every sort of train going anywhere. That "K" crew thing, that IS new. Might be coal inta Canada, or back from. Then again Balmer still sees inbound/outbound trains all the time. And that includes oil tanks!

Balmer is where crews report, and are transferred by van to other Seattle Terminal yards. More often than not the power sits waiting here, or the vans transports the crew out to either South Sea, or the yard at Stacy St. for an intermodal/stacker. South Sea sees more Z-trains outbound/inbound crews and waiting power.

Puget Sound without a doubt still counts as an originating/terminating point on BNSF. That includes Seattle, Everett, and Tacoma. Every one a port for sea/containers, and break-bulk, not ta mention the raw logs going outa Longview on ships via the Columbia River, and Vancouver, WA. Add to that mix Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Uncle Warren smiles broadly as he sees dollars and cents roll in!

Yes, the money he's saved on wheel machine costs alone would make him smile.
