Asphalt leaks into creek.
MCDOWELL COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A Norfolk-Southern freight train derailed in McDowell County Friday morning, leaking asphalt into a nearby creek..
A total of 17 cars and two tankers derailed in the Vivian area near Kimball around 8:35 a.m.
At least 7 of the cars were completely off the tracks. One tanker was ruptured and spilling asphalt into Elkhorn Creek.
The train was travelling eastbound. The tracks are now closed in both directions. A portion of the track was damaged in the accident.
A Hazmat team has been called to the scene, and is expected to arrive in the afternoon.
Crews from the Department of Highways, Welch Fire Department, and Kimball Fire Department are also on the scene.
No injuries have been reported.
As of 9:45 a.m., 911 said it did not appear that Route 52 would be closed, however some rail crossings on secondary roads may be closed..
