If it wasn't for the GP38-2 Conrail never would have been Gonerail.

Still Snippy's favorite.

She'll give you everything she's got and get down on her knees and beg for you to give her more.

All around one of EMD's best, the -2 series from La Grange

Beautiful units, and very user friendly, whether you were behind the throttle, or doing routine maintenance! Non-turbo 16V-645 engines, D-12/14 alternator, 26-L brakes, and easy in/out D-78 DC motors.

The best damn road unit EMD built was the SD40-2. The same equipment as the 38-2, except for the turbocharged engine, which put out an honest 3000 ponies, plus two more traction motors. And like the 38, had modular/solid state electrical controls.

Long-haul units, worked hard, and maintained well... BN/BNSF still rosters hundreds, but keeps 'em in yards, and the occasional local!

Porch Edition, please. They work so much better than the non-porched Dash nothing models.

Still, give me a quiet non-turbo GP38-2 with the auto-sander, anti-choking mod performed. This jewel is 40 1/4 years old. Quiet, good brakes and has no trouble burying the ammeter over 1500 amps.....

Yepper! Everything Snippy says about the 38-2 is true! Then again the truth about the 40-2 series is also a well established fact!

The point being they became EMD's most popular locomotive of all time, with more units produced and sold worldwide than any other model! (Thus far!)
