The old GN Depot at Bellingham WA is a historical

building so the BN and BNSF have kept their

part of the deal as keeping the outside looking

like its supposed to but on the inside all kinds of

things went on as BN started making cubicles and

office squares in the waiting room of the depot.

I worked in this depot from 1979-1983. It was in

many ways the funnest time I had in my railroad

career. But you know nothing lasts forever in railroad

world as there hasnt been a clerks position available

in Bellingham or north of Seattle since about 1996.

So on Christmas Day 2014 driving home from Mom's

house, I re-visted the now BNSF facilities at Bellingham.

The GP Mill in Bham closed for good maybe 5yrs ago which

accounted for a lot of business. Bellingham is not a ghost

town but for the BNSF in Bellingham it sure looked like it.

The GN/BN/BNSF Depot at the foot of D street in Bellingham

was my mecca as a kid and still to this day. Lucky some

power parked to get pictures of. The best pictures come from

locomotives standing still. The Sun never came out this day

but I shot pictures anyway. I need to talk with someone in

the know as to how the BNSF are "crewing" these trains

on the BNSF Bham Subdiv today. Just as I was getting back

in my car..I heard these 2-engines getting fired up so some

train crew getting ready to get paid what they are worth..

working on Christmas Day. Think BNSF Bellingham now is

a town where its importance is to keep the mainline

clear for all the coal and oil trains and their empties

to pass thru uninterrupted.

I know Bellingham hasnt joined the world with RC switching.
Actually I doubt there are switch jobs still in Bham. Think
mayby one of the locals..New West or Cherry Pt Turn or
whaterever the job is called today maybe doing any switching
needed in Bham. The town doesnt miss the smells of GP but
the BNSF lost a 35-50 lds outbound a day and that many
inbound a day. They have made great progress in tearing
down the GP Pulp Mill in Bham as its almost gone. Same
thing happened in Everett recently as well as the icon
Scott Paper Mill got the wrecking ball and its hard to
believe a huge pulp mill is not there anymore.
