As you know I'm a clerk, an operator, a bridgetender.

So I pass on a topic that will get all our hogheads

chiming in..I love real people talking about todays

locomotives. This real-time reporting will beat the

next issue of Trains Magazine  by 3-months. I

sort of  have an "engineer-envy". Wouldnt want to

trade shoes with the guy but some engineers have

passed on some "extra-knowledge" to me that

I have appreciated. So I hope this topic will generate

many posts.

Pencil necked geeks. Whistlepeters who went out and got hired somehow. They have nothing better to do than to think up mountains of bullshit to impress their non employee whistlepeter friends.

The main difference between a 6 axle and a four axle loco is with the 2 less motors there is more current available to provide faster acceleration. That's why you don't see any 6 axle Amtrack units. With 2 less motors you are applying sufficient power to spin the wheels at lower speeds. A 4 axel loco was made to take a light train and run 60 or 70mph with it. A 6 axle engine was made to lug heavy trains up mountain grades at 20 mph.

Now, that being said, once you get a heavy train up to speed removing 2 motors from the pulling source could give the ability on flat ground to have your cake and eat it. This won't work in hill country.
