Baddest locomotive out there.

Thanks to drainoders the subject get raised again as

if maybe we were a little hasty in judgement of the

the newest mainstream locomotives initially. So is

there a "good current' model of locomotive that

"feels good" running the thing and its impressed you

in other ways.

GE-Nice seats but fucking junk.
SD70MAC-Pulls like a bastard but you'll freeze your ass off in it over the winter.
EMD SD-60 was a mean pulling engine. Loud and uncomfortable but got the job done.

The last few 60s BN purchased in the 1990s and ran into the ground pulling coal, have been renumbered as 1400s. They put out an honest ta gawd 3800 ponies, had half-way decent trucks under 'm. and they'd pull. Really pull. Unfortunately they (Uncle Warren's gang in Ft. Worthless) reassigned all the 60s ta local service only...

Too bad! The brakes were pretty damn good as well, early 30-L desk-top type controls, although more akin to 26-L under the floor! The 60s were like a better 40... Very user friendly in mechanical terms!

You'll get no argument from this side! Almost every 38-2, and 40-2 were EMD's best! Damn things did what you told 'em ta do! They didn't try ta out-think ya, because they had no Gawd-damn computers!

Betcha if we had a pole, lotsa members would admit ta preferring older EMDs for every type of service! (Good mechanical forces could trouble-shoot 'em, put 'em back into service faster than any other power built!)

GE/EMD...  Only hoggers who run 'em know which models are best for which type of service! We've been here before, if memory serves...

Author: Habu
1. GE AC6000CW -- as stated by several posters, they will flat-out pull
2. ES44AC/AH / AC4400CW
3. SD70MAC -- in their younger days they were solid pullers (sure, they had their idiosyncrasies, but overall good motors)
4. SD40-2 -- before AC traction & microprocessors, the SD40-2 was king: power, reliability, quick loading, great riding

Sluggo has his bonafides as a real locomotive engineer in Snippy's book.

Never heard a SD45 before I hired out in Everett in 1973.
They passed by my place of work with every long distance
freight. I also saw them in action on the 2.2 grade of Stevens
Pass and actually made 2 unathorized student trips riding
them over Stevens. A locomotive you can recognize from
all others with big flared radiators. 4-5 SD45's leading a
train from a dead stop to as fast as you can go with no
worrys about how much smoke you create and the sound
that you can feel near your heart.

You tube has a lot video of SD45's. Sure there are many
better examples than this but this one will suprise you
when the engineer hits 8th notch and you do get a sense
of its power and sound.

Nothing was said in that video about the engineer's attitude.

We used to get those on run-through power. Back when. We had our own 1700's back when, tu.

Snippy, do you mean to tell us that not all "Red Heads" have bad attitudes? How do you know Ray Wirt doesn't have a black dog?

Snippy is posting now, just for the sheer pleasure of jacking up his post count. Kind of like this. Does it have anything with the return of ***?
