Five killed in Colorado Amtrak train-car crash: state police

Five people were killed in Colorado on Sunday when an Amtrak passenger train collided with a car in Las Animas County in the southern part of the U.S. state, state police said.

The train collided with a vehicle carrying six people, said Colorado State Patrol Trooper Josh Lewis.

A girl was airlifted to a Denver-area hospital with serious injuries, Lewis said. No crew or passengers were injured on the train, he said.

Amtrak said there were 286 passengers on the Chicago to Los Angeles line. The train struck a vehicle that was on the tracks at roughly 9:45 a.m. near Trinidad, Colorado, about four miles (6.5 km) east of the Amtrak Trinidad station.

Amtrak said some of its equipment was damaged but crews quickly made repairs and the train resumed its journey.

Scotland's rails are generally safe by comparison where passenger train riders take to the rails... But every now and then, poop flies!

Saw on the 10PM Fox news about a AMTRACK that had a low-speed derailment at Tukwila
just south of Seattle. Just the engine needs to be re-railed.

Adding to Amtrak woes, wonder what the real story is?

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va (WVIR) -
Passengers on a Charlottesville-bound Amtrak say their train somehow ended up heading the wrong way toward a different destination in Virginia.

The Northeast Regional 171 train is due arrive at Charlottesvilles Amtrak station on schedule Wednesday. On Tuesday night, it arrived an hour and forty-four minutes late after passengers say it ended up heading toward Richmond instead of Charlottesville.

Below are some posts people put on Facebook describing their experience (they did not want to be identified):

"This is a disastrous train trip back to Charlottesville. The train is on the wrong tracks because dispatch thinks our destination is Richmond."

""My train from NYC to Charlottesville, already late, seems to have found its way onto the wrong track, headed to Richmond."
One passenger (who did not want to appear on camera) told NBC29 the train didn't move for a long time, before it started slowly backing up to get on the right track to Charlottesville.

A passenger bound for Lynchburg, Frances Rogers, called the trip "miserable." Rogers wants answers from Amtrak.

Somehow we ended up on the wrong track, luckily, they caught it fairly quickly. We had gone maybe 10 minutes and they stopped and said folks we're on the wrong track. I'd like to know how that happens, how do you get on the wrong track? Asked Rogers.

Amtrak's train tracker shows the train lost almost an hour between Alexandria and its next stop. That's where passengers say the train had to reverse course.

NBC29 reached out to Amtrak for comment, and to find out if the train was ever in danger on the wrong track. A spokeswoman for Amtrak said they are "Working to confirm the details on service on train 171."

When those details become available NBC29 will update this story.

Sounds like Jacksonville (or, wherever it is now) put them on the RF&P at "Sema-tary" instead of LAMCO at CR Tower.

Ever get lined the wrong way? Experienced HAWGS would question it or stop or take some appropriate action. I think.

Roger Ailes, how many anchors have you promoted today.

Never got lined the wrong way, but the plant is very long.

Snippy can see that they may have upgraded it with a lot of Corporate Welfare money and have fairly high speeds through there. It was 45 way back when going through CR Tower onto the Southren.

I can see getting well into the RF&P (it's a right stiff knot to take a left and go Richmond way to get over the Southren overpass there), and then taking forever for the bureaucracy to get the dispatcher OOS, pissed, executed, shot, call off the dogs who are headed out to shoot the Slamtrak HAWG, and permission from everybody up to Thanks 0'bama to back up. Then, next stop Manassas. Oh, and the Slamtrak backing-up help isn't exactly stellar as noted earlier this week.

That's one fiasco there Bub.

All the Hawgs I know are anticipating a certain signal in a certain place, I'd really be surprised if the train went down the wrong track for 10 minutes.

We have a place that used to be called Miller, that was redone and is now called Cherry Run. It is where the old WM came across the Potomac and interchanged

with the B&O. In the Chessie merger the WM west of Big Pool was abandoned and torn up, and the main got reconnected to the connection track to Miller wich always was and still is Yard Limits. The signals on the old WM east to Hagerstown were torn out and DTC blocks were instituted.

So, Miller was also the beginning of 4 track (the low grade) track from Miller to West Cumbo that coal trains could use without helper power to get to West Cumbo. The grade on 1 and 2 tracks between Miller and West Cumbo was way too heavy for the average coal train.

All this set up to make this example..

If yer going east and need the low grade track to West Cumbo, you will get an approach limited signal at Sleepy Creek, and then a limited clear at Cherry Run. speed is 40.

if yer going east and are taking the Lurgan Branch to Hagerstown you will get an Approach Medium at Sleepy creek and a medium clear at Cherry run, after you talk to the DS who will give you authority into cherry run yard limits and the dtc blocks to Hagerstown. speed is yard limits !!

So if yer goin east to Hagerstown and you get a approach limited, youre not lined right get ready to stop, call DS.

If yer goin east with a heavy coal train and need the low grade and you get an approach medium, look out he may have ya lined to Hagerstown.

My guess is same thing applies at seminary. And If ya wanna know fer sure ask any VRE crews that were around, they report EVERY delay and the fist thing they ask you is what is your train id, then they repeat it talking to the BOSS back in the train. I used to make crackling noises and pretend like there was something wrong with the mic when theyd ask me...

blankstare This will give the entire thread a wide-on, but this in the plant at Seminary. The signals are actually off the far right side. It would be quite a back-up move if they backed you all the way up to go CR Tower. They could have headed "wrong-way" (TC/CTC) down the northbound tracks, but that would require some creativity by the DS. Doubtful. "We'll do it the way we meant to do it in the first place."

You'd be going right to left. Charlottesville is the very top track on this view. The RF&P curves back over the Southren at the bottom and heads to Richmond.

Even though there are multiple northbound Southren tracks, the passenger trains ran south through CR tower at the top.
