A New Season, A New Coach, Same Old Dilemmas

Troll, will there ever come a day where things aren't dismal?

BEREA, Ohio The Cleveland Browns trotted out their new head coach and two new front office employees to meet the media today on the eve of the teams opening of training camp.

The new faces were met with some old problems.

Such is it goes for a franchise that has had eight consecutive losing seasons and only two winning records while going 87-185 since returning to the NFL as an expansion franchise in 1999.

New coach Hue Jackson, executive vice president of football operations Sashi Brown, and chief strategy officer Paul DePodesta had their press conference today dominated by questions about anuncertain quarterback situation and a player suspended by the NFL.

Jackson, former offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals, made news at the teams refurbished facility by saying for the first time that hell name a starting quarterback by time the Browns play their first preseason game Aug. 12 at Green Bay.

>> Video | Jackson says he'll pick a starting QB before first preseason game

"I know everybody wants me to say here's our guy," Jackson said. "We're going to hit the ground running starting tomorrow and start evaluating the process."

That quarterback wont be Johnny Manziel, the flamboyant flameout who was released by Cleveland after the season.

Instead, Jackson will be choosing between reclamation project Robert Griffin III  signed to a two-year, $15 million free agent contract in March and veteran Josh McGowan, 37, who started eight games when he wasnt injured in last years 3-13 season.

The Browns, who opens the regular season Sept. 11 at Philadelphia, will also be looking at Austin Davis and rookie Cody Kessler, a third-round draft pick out of Southern California, at quarterback.

Griffin, the No. 2-overall pick of the 2012 draft by the Redskins, will be the dominant storyline during training camp. He enjoyed a record-breaking rookie season before his career was curtailed by injury and locker room dissention. He didnt play one game last season after losing his starting job to Kirk Cousins.

While the muddled quarterback situation isnt new for Cleveland which has started 24 different quarterbacks since 1999 neither is talk about a malcontent player trying to come back from off-field trouble. Only this time its not Manziel.

The most question faced by the new Browns brass today concerned Josh Gordon, a former all-pro wide receiver who sat out all last season after being banned by the league in February 2015 for multiple violations.

Gordon was reinstated by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on Monday on a conditional basis from his indefinite suspension for substance abuse.
Although Gordon will be suspended for the seasons first four because of his most recent violation in March, the league will allow him to attend team meetings and other activities except for practices and games.

Hes excited to be back and were glad to have him back, Brown said. For us, its about Josh wanting to change, and he got the opportunity. Well find out really quickly if hes serious about it. We believe he is.

Except that hes not quite back. The Browns placed Gordon on the active/non-football injury list Tuesday with a leg injury after he reported to training camp and took a physical. Hes expected to miss at least a couple of weeks of training camp.

Besides Gordon and the quarterback battle, the Browns training camp should be highlighted by battles for playing time at wide receiver, offensive line, and throughout the overhauled defense.

Its going to be an open competition at every position other than maybe (All-Pro offensive tackle) Joe Thomas, Jackson said.

Former Ohio State star Terrelle Pryor is here trying to make the Browns as a wide receiver after playing quarterback earlier in his career. Cleveland cut him prior to last season.

The Browns will hold 11 training camp practices here in Berea. On Aug. 6, theyll hold an intra-squad scrimmage at Ohio Stadium on the OSU camp that will be free to the public.

Wasnt Vinnie Testaverde involved also? Then They moved and became the Baltimore Ravens, and the good folks in Cleveland shelled out 300 million to build a new stadium for the bunch a losers they have been saddled with since. Bang for the buck....only if the tax payers are the ones bending over....ya cant say they are all fans.

Kosar got his ring as a back up to Aikman with the '94 Super Bowl champs. I was working at Hopkins when he was running to catch the flight to Dallas. I shook his hand and told him to go get his ring.

Ben:

We spent $100K on study that said we should take Bridgewater and our literal crook owner vetoed it to take Johnny Fucking Football. That somehow doesnt even crack our Top 25 worst moments since coming back to town.

 If this is true.....
