Do you think that there's a derail there very near that home signal?  Well, do ya?

No one appears to have been injured when an Amtrak passenger train derailed on Sunday afternoon in Steilacoom, near Chambers Bay, the Pierce County Sheriffs office is reporting.

Photos posted on Twitter showed that the the train appeared to have derailed while it was crossing a narrow stretch of land bordering the water, just before a bridge.

Photographs posted on local media show the front of the train crumpled against the bridge. The Gig Harbor Police Department reported that it had dispatched a patrol boat to help state environmental officials lay a protective boom in the water around the site in the event of a fuel leak.

As a first guess, I congradulate yer eagle eye Cy. To answer your question, Yes, one of the very best kind of derails is near that home signal.

Obviously, Amtrak HAWG was part of an advance testing team.

Well, kinda sorta....I was referring to the white painted smash board affixed to the signal shown as an example.

The smashboard was installed so as to project into the path of the Locomotive when a stop aspect was desired.

The resultant smashing of said board on the windshield of the locomotive was to have alerted a napping or distracted Hawg.
