...about GE-unk locomotive business. They wanna shed their schitt...and get back to their 'core' bizness... Light bulbs, home appliances, medical devices, and lending money. How in the fuck do ya come to a point like this after 110 years as a business leader, and an original member of the Dow-Jones Industrial founding fucking member, which as a REAL goddamn INDUSTRY, not a store, donut, or hamburger  maker...or a drug-store chain, or a fucking retailer!

https://www.cnbc.com/2017/10/26/ge-considers-exiting-railroad-business-report.html

Maybe ALCO should buy 'em, and reintroduce the line with the best American built diesel engines ever, the 251-F! (The only engines put into all USCG boats built new, i.e.,cutters, patrol, ice-breakers, etc.)

CAT, through its subsidiary Progress Rail ain't interested. At least that's what they say right now, but IF the price is right...

Kind of shocking news as GE has pretty much dominated the locomotive industry
the last 25yrs. I cant think of a buyer of the GE locomotive operation that could
continue the way it has been but I'm sure there is one.

Speaking as a Erie GE apprentice grad--this is a sad day.  GE apprentice program is the best thing that ever happened to me.  Fifty years ago the loco shops were in the center of the complex.  Other large ops were located north and south of the LCE works.

It will be messy to pull the core out of this apple. cry

Wait, wait...no more locomotives? Well there is the 'used' locomotive market, where bargains abound! And the 'kits' that outfits like LAMCO has at Altoona just waiting to be assembled. Yeah, Juniata will even paint, and number 'em for your railroad. So GE quits building locomotives? No big deal. there's plenty of ordered/undelivered stock on their books. Just bid on 'em, and pick up at Erie, or south of the border, down Mexico way! They're new locomotives, with all the options, electronics, computers, and schitt! GEt 'em while they're hot!

Yep there it is! GE wants outa the whole railroad biz. They hate trains, especially locomotives. They lose millions of dollars on every one. materials for manufacturing just ONE loco cost more than they sell for. Hence a zero gain! Nobody in any kinda business stays alive operating any business this way!

GE says "Fuck this shit!" And pulls the plug on their biggest money losing segment!

Rail products

GE Transportation is the largest producer of diesel-electric locomotives for both freight and passenger applications in North America, believed to hold up to a 70% market share. It also produces related products, such as railroad signaling equipment, and parts for locomotives and railroad cars, as well as providing repair services for GE and other locomotives.

Current locomotives in major production include the GE Evolution Series; for a complete listing, see the list of GE locomotives. In the spring of 2007, GE Transportation Systems rolled out a prototype hybrid diesel-electric locomotive to increase fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. In September 2010, GE Transportation announced plans to commercialise a hybrid design by 2014-15.

On July 27, 2017, GE Transportation announced that production of locomotives will move from Erie, Pennsylvania, to Fort Worth, Texas, by the end of 2018.

In addition to the railroad industry, GE Transportation also serves the following industries: Marine, Mining, Stationary Power, Drilling, and Drivetrain Technologies (wind gear boxes).

Should we be concerned about the future quality of motive power for whatever traffic remains?

Perhaps. However IF you're a retiree who still holds a 401-K that you joined while toiling away for a railroad, that you might've rolled over into an IRA, or a Roth IRA. Most of which still hold GE shares, as most S&P 500 plans do! If so you'd've experienced a loss in value of your GE shares. Within just the last week or so, GE's share value has dropped at least 8%, and cut their dividend yield in half!

Awful, just awful...

I think that has more to do with GE overall, not the decision to quit making locomotives. Anyway. . .

Maybe the folks that make SD70-MAC's-Ace's not that saddened by the news. Time to unveil
the "SD-100-MAC/ACE" 5000hp units.

What would they do with 5000 hp? The lesser EMD/caterpillar offerings shake and buck and drop thier load then pick it up, shaking the train down to its core, popping countless knuckles, pissing the BOSS off.

Caterpillar saw the big Diesel as an outlet for its engines but the devil is in the ac motor technology. You got all that power now how do you get it to the rail 24/7 all kinds of weather?

GE has all the expierence with actual AC applications, they dominate the AC market because of it. Now the big western roads put 7 and 8 engines on a train, spreading the load out and not taxing thier motors.

The eastern roads try to get the absolute last ton of freight the train will pull with whatever power they can scrape up. They run in Notch 8, pulling everything but the yard office, the BOSS can get off and walk along side picking and eating berries

and still beat the train to the top.

The test for any new power on CSX is 35 loads of coal on the mountain subdivision.

CSX hasnt bought any "posers" in a long while. The last ones were called thunder cabs cause they were built without insulation in the cabs. Ya know its bad when guys carry earplugs with them. (No longer in crew packs...they did bring back hand soap tho)

Just being nice, theres a reason GE is "King of the Mountain".

I only want to know one thing. Does the BOSS share the berries that he picks?
