The National Railway Equipment Company in Silvis Illinois has on hand just about every locomotive

"type" built in their expansive yard/shops. Its really surreal to see so many locomotives in one place

that are "dead for now". Worn-out locomotives with shabby worn-out paint and patched a couple times

with different railroad ownership. A "Fallen-Flag" collection of paint schemes never seen in one place.

I recognized two BN units the BN 1422 and BN 1789 as I used to see them daily in action long ago

and have pictures of them both. How I would love to spend a week taking a pictures of every unit

from ground level in different light conditions. So this drone put to pretty good use as its pretty close

to if your were to "astral-travel" over the place.

Saved this profile pic of yours off the internets. The BN 1422. Old GP-7. Swapped out more one power assembly (HLP), plus a motor now and again before they sold her.

I never liked those "GP10's" the BN 1400 series. I thought the chop nose looked awful.
The GPNW got assigned a lot of the GP10's right after they were created. They were on
nearly every freight in the early 1980's that wasnt going over a mountain pass. A lot
of them replaced the standby GP7/9 as the towns switcher. I took pictures of them anyway
dispite their bad looks.

GP4.5 - Bad Dream

Worst fucking engine I ever ran outside of a GE U-Boat was a GP "four and a half". They only did tu of them and they were "ours" - 903 & 905.

The ever brilliant Red Team guys took half the pistons out of a GP9 and sent it out to do the work of a real engine. They didn't bother to chop the nose or take the steam generator out, IIRC. I can remember dropping a car by at over 40 mph in the heart of super-multi-crossinged beautiful Downtown Suffolk, VA because, after getting the slack, the car would keep running into the locomotive. The engine couldn't get out of its own way even leaving the throttle WFO getting the slack. Of course, also Red Team old-head Cap'n mentality, we couldn't do it any other way. We had tu make the drop.

Befitting the now long-running corporation and paint scheme (half-assed and shitty), it was a GP4.5 that was used to officially unveil the zebra paint scheme we still know and ove. Apocryphal story is that the Thoroughbred had been well-hung under the tarp. The first of many anatomically correct Thoroughbreds. GAWD!, they were pist.

So good tu see a picture of it dead and razor-ready (Memo tu Calclvlin: please take good note of the SkullCrKr 5000, extra trumpette edition on the 903.)

They dont really need a horn anyway. Anything used in switching had so many flatspots you'd lose your sanity if you worked thru lunch.

Keeping up with the topic "this is not a dream" I stumble across this video on
the Union Pacific units stored in a 4.3 mile line in the Arizona desert. Over 300
in perfect working condition hooked up together as the "Worlds most powerful lashup".
But if you were to hook the "Worlds most powerful lashup" to any train I bet you might
pull a drawbar out of the socket. Also if the power lashup is 4.3 miles long that in itself
would not fit into any siding on any railroad. So forget the "World most powerful lashup".
I'm not sure I ever seen any thing like this with locomotives...maybe rolling stock stored
in miles long strings. This is one impressive collection of power sitting on the sidelines.
Most are the older bigs and less fuel efficient but still worthy.

Then the same thing going on the BNSF as they got "miles" of locomotives sitting around in
several places in Wyoming with I'm guessing not enough coal trains right now. There are
other videos of lines of "stored power" on other railroads.

Interesting contrast between the two biggest outfits. On the UP a mix of power, GEs and EMDs. If there's a logical explanation of 'why' these units, it'd have to be mileage. Despite the age of 'em, UP runs their power in every type of service. BNSF stores hundreds of high-horse EMDs, usually, but not always coal train types. Lotsa SD 70-MACs in dark green/white, original BN paint. Many more of the later type SD-70 ACe units favored in drag service. Orange/green Long, heavy coal trains.

The latest news is that 4.3 mile long string of UP locomotives has dwindled considerably
to maybe only a half mile. Doesn't mean business picked up dramatically. I cant pretend
to know whats going on on the UP.

Our only connection ra the goings on at Uncle Pete's outfit has been MIA since last year. Although Brizy does interchange directly with UP frequently. Perhaps he has a clue or three.

Actually our erstwhile 'pal' HHB has been missing from these discussions for about TWO years. Perhaps a search party should be convened?

HHB has moved on. At least, (we don't think) he didn't leave mad.
