They hit so hard that it put two cars on the ground. Note the last line.
FROSTPROOF Emily Moncrief, 23, of Avon Park and Lyndsay Serey, 23, of Sebring, were killed when they hit a CSX train in Frostproof at about 3 a.m. Friday. A preliminary report by the Polk County Sheriffs Office gave a basic synopsis of the wreck, until a more detailed report can be obtained.
Moncrief was driving a 2012 black Dodge caravan eastbound on U.S. 98, according to Public Information Officer Brian Bruchey. Serey was her passenger and both ladies were wearing their seat belts.
Moncrief failed to stop at the functional railroad crossing warning actuator, Bruchey said. She went through the railroad arm bar and struck the 27th car of the train. It was well through the roadway when she struck it.
The train was headed north, and the Dodge hit it on the left side. The impact of the minivan derailed the train.
The report did not cite any skid marks or attempts to stop.
The two were taken to the medical examiners office for autopsies and blood toxicology reports.
The final reports will not be in until the postmortem results are in.
