My first pics of BN Cascade Green and White 1971
(Preview)
Summer of 1971 I bought a Russian 35mm camera...the Zenit-E from Ritz Camera on a mail-order. Think it was $70 dollars and since I was 17 yrs old $70 was a big purchase. The camera served me pretty well as I took many of the pictures that ended up in my high school yearbook with it and lots of train pictures....

So what are the rules if any on "coasting"?
(Preview)
Two great examples of "coasting" would be revelant to BN/BNSF Stevens Pass in WA State where each side of the pass has 30 miles of downhill. The 2.2% grades are descended with full dynamic braking and a pretty loud roar but once they reach some level ground like at Merrit where its flat for mi...

Bad paint jobs
(Preview)
Paint jobs gone bad. The BNSF hasn't cared a lot what paint jobs are still running around 18 years after the BNSF Merger. BNSF so far has only cared about the paint schemes on new orders of locomotives..H-1, H-2, BNSF Swoosh. I've seen several Sante Fe "red and silver" paint jobs that have tu...

Been going through my BN Ferndale pictures and probly some of my best came from an unauthorized student trip aboard the Cherry Point Local that ran out of Bellingham to New West BC and switched the Tilbury branch at night. These pictures came when it was still light out at Ferndale. It was one of those &q...

BN Christmas Train at Blaine
(Preview)
I got the honor to work 3rd trick opr at Blaine WA on Christmas Eve 1982. I wasnt expecting what rolled into Blaine about 2am Christmas Morning but a couple of SD-45's with strings of Christmas lights hanging from the lead unit was just so cool. I always carry a camera so I made 7 attemps to capture this sce...

Remaining BNSF SD40-2's
(Preview)
BN/BNSF had a huge fleet of SD40-2's somewhere near a 1000. Lots of leases expired over the years and a lot of BN painted locos are now running trains in other parts of the world. So whats left on the roster now having been re-numbered into the "1600-1900" series. Have to think a good running S...

BNSF EMD GP-60B's
(Preview)
I caught some of the EMD GP-60 test runs on the BN with the cab units. The "GP-60B's" were Sante Fe's liking of the idea of a cabless GP-60 in silver and red paint to run all the "Super C" trains of the Sante Fe. I guess it must have worked for a while. If you need to get a train across coun...

Even though I have very few pictures of the current operations, I can catch-up in a hurry. So what's "rare" today? Certainly not any modern GE Unit or EMD unit. The GPNW is home to many re-built GP30-35's. They are photogenik but hardly get your juices flowing. So I open up to any members sugg...

The "fog-horn" train whistle.
(Preview)
Growing up in Bham, there were 2 different whistle sounds during the railroad activity daily. The GN and NP had the more modern "multi-chime" train horns while the Milwaukee had the "fog-horn" whistle. Not exactly sure when the "fog-horn" whistle died from use. K...
