Teen Falls Into Open Manhole While Texting
NEW YORK (CBS)
It was an accident waiting to happen -- an open sewer and a 15-year-old girl who was texting while she walked.
Alexa Longueira, a high school sophomore, was plunged into smelly darkness while texting. She said the manhole she fell in to was left open and unattended with no warning signs or orange cones, CBS station WCBS-TV reported.
She said the manhole she fell in to was left open and unattended with no warning signs or orange cones. She said two workers with the New York City Department of Environmental Protection failed to secure the area as they prepared to flush the sewer.
"It was just really gross and it was shocking and scary," she said. "Because of their careless mistake I got hurt."
Longueira has deep cuts and bruises and said she now has nightmares about falling, but she also did admit she was texting when the accident happened.
"Regardless of whether I'm texting or not if there was a cone there I'm gong to see a big orange cone," she said. "I walk that sidewalk every day, I don't expect a big hole there."
Longueira said she was helped out of the five-foot deep sewer by an apologetic DEP worker.
She went to the hospital and the city opened an investigation, issuing the following statement:
"We regret that this happened and wish the young woman a speedy recovery."
The Longueira family wants more than get well wishes. They may sue. Alexa's mother, Kim, said: "It could have been an elderly person, a mother pushing a stroller. It could have been anyone."
Alexa lost one of her sneakers in the sewer. She does not want it back.
The girl's mother said Alexa will see more doctors next week to get an MRI and check for damage to her spine.
She fell in on top of Troll, and that really upset her.

Alleged Bank Robber Hitches Ride From Detective
SAGINAW, Mich. (AP)
Authorities say a parolee who robbed a Michigan bank was caught when he tried to hitch a ride from an undercover police detective.
Mark E. White was arraigned Friday on charges that include bank robbery and making a false bomb threat. He is being held at the Saginaw County Jail on $755,000 bond. It was not clear whether White had an attorney. Police did not immediately return a message seeking comment Saturday.
Authorities tell The Saginaw News that White flagged down Saginaw Township Detective Scott Jackson on Wednesday after the bank robbery a few blocks away.
White was paroled June 16 after serving time for operating a vehicle while intoxicated and violating an earlier parole.
I dunno... This one beats 'em all ta hell. In my opinion. And weirdest of all, it's right in Fred's hood!
Police: Man impersonates priest, visits officer
July 14, 2009 9:00 PM EDT
PHILADELPHIA - A 26-year-old Philadelphia man suspected of impersonating a priest while visiting a wounded police officer was arrested on Monday. The man was charged with criminal trespass and false impersonating. Investigators said he posed as a Roman Catholic priest last month and entered a hospital's intensive care unit to visit Officer Richard Hayes.
Officials from the Archdiocese of Philadelphia said the one-time seminary student also attended funerals for slain officers and presented himself as part of the religious community but not a priest. Church officials call the matter deeply disturbing.
Hayes was struck by another vehicle during a traffic stop. He remains hospitalized.

Lawsuit: dentist dropped tools down man's throat
July 18, 2009 12:24 PM EDT
WINTER PARK, Fla. - A Florida dentist is being sued for allegedly dropping tools down the throat of an elderly patient - twice.
Relatives of 90-year-old Charles Gaal Jr. recently filed the suit in circuit court accusing Dr. Wesley Meyers of negligence. An answering message at Meyers' office in Winter Park said Saturday that he was on vacation. He did not reply to a message from The Associated Press seeking comment.
The lawsuit says the doctor dropped an "implant screwdriver tool" in 2006 and a "mini-wrench" in 2007.
The suit also says Gaal underwent several medical procedures to remove the tools but never fully recovered. He died in 2007.
Meyers was fined $17,000 by the state a year later. The dentist was found negligent in a settlement.

Easy to arrest this drunk driver
PAW PAW, Mich. (AP) - July 24, 2009 -- Michigan troopers didn't have to go very far to make a drunken driving bust.
Authorities say the suspect drove onto the lawn of the Michigan State Police post in Paw Paw.
Troopers report the driver was visibly drunk and had vomited on himself.
According to the troopers, the man picked the wrong spot to stop and rest.
Police say he has a history drunken driving arrests and his blood-alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit.
Police said a 13-year-old boy drove a car off the fourth story of a Sears parking garage in Upper Darby Saturday night.
The teen was transported to the Children's Hospital of Pennsylvania with non-life threatening injuries.
There is now word yet on how the boy wound up behind the wheel of the vehicle.

Teen Sets Self On Fire To Imitate YouTube Clip
Mom Points Finger At Video Web Site
POSTED: 3:13 am EDT August 12, 2009 UPDATED: 7:44 pm EDT August 12, 2009
DELTONA, Fla. -- A Deltona teenager was hospitalized on Wednesday after suffering multiple burns while imitating a video posted on YouTube.
Russell Gortzig
Russell Gortzig, 13, said his friend siphoned gasoline from a riding lawnmower and poured it on Gortzig. The teen said he held the lighter away from him, but a combination of the spark and fumes caught his shorts on fire.
"Skin missing all the way down to his ankle on the front and the back," mother Linda McCrea said.
McCrea said the boys were trying to copy a stunt they saw on the video sharing Web site, YouTube, where a man in a banana suit lights himself on fire. She warned other parents to closely monitor the online activities of their children and wants YouTube to tighten its user guidelines. She believes YouTube is partially to blame for her son' pain.
A representative for YouTube said the Web site takes in 20 hours of video every minute and said, while it's impossible to screen postings in advance, users can flag potentially dangerous video.
It is reviewed and age restrictions are often added.
Gortzig is in stable condition at Arnold Palmer Children's Hospital.
