That fat man right there, Fats Waller, was largely self taught... And was one hell of pianist, composer, arranger, and sometimes vocalist.
There's a story somewhere about how Al Capone's boys kidnapped waller ta play for Al at his birthday party. The party lasted for several days, and when it was over, Capone filled Fats' pockets with plenty folding green! That may be half true, but that Fats did influence damn near every Jazz pianist who followed him is undisputed!

Wish I could remember the old HAWG's name I knew who claimed he knew Al. Yeah, him and Al were buds, all he had to do was go up to Al's place anytime he wanted and he'd live like a king for a couple of days. Course, I never quite believed him but who knows.
