An investigation is underway after an officer was forced to open fire on a suspect during a traffic stop in North Philadelphia late Sunday night.
Authorities said a pair of officers from the 25th District stopped an SUV near 9th and Allegheny at about 11:45 p.m.
As the officers approached the vehicle, they said they noticed a weapon between the driver's legs. The driver was ordered to shut down the vehicle, but he instead put the SUV into reverse in an apparent attempt to strike the officers.
One officer was knocked to the side as the other unholstered his weapon and opened fire on the suspect as he sped off from the scene.
Police said the injured suspect crashed into a nearby vehicle before speeding off and crashing again into two vehicles near 9th and Percy Streets.
The suspect fled on foot and was taken into custody a short distance from the scene. He was treated for a graze wound to the arm at Temple University Hospital.
Neither officer was injured in the incident.
Officials said a gun was recovered from inside the suspect's vehicle. The incident remains under investigation by Internal Affairs, as is standard procedure when an officer discharges their weapon.

Frankford Man Charged In Beating Death Of Neighbor
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) A Northeast Philadelphia man has been charged in the fatal beating of his elderly neighbor Monday evening.
Michael Bocchinfuso, 44, has been charged with murder in the deadly beating of 71-year-old Dallas "Chief" Costello.
Police were called to the 1300 block of Anchor Street in Frankford after Costello was allegedly beaten to death by Bocchinfuso with a shovel, trash can and chair in the middle of the street.
"We don't know what sparked this, it's just all of a sudden he knocked on his door without any provocation, any words, nothing was said," Captain James Clark explained.
Following the assault, Bocchinfuso barricaded himself inside his home for several hours.
SWAT Team members and a police negotiator were called to the residence, which reportedly contained a variety of homemade traps. Bocchinfuso was taken into custody at about midnight.
Costello was transported to Frankford-Torresdale Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Police said Bocchinfuso has had previous encounters with the law, including an arrest for aggravated assault in 2007. He also apparently has a history of mental illness.
Family members said the deadly attack was unprovoked. The motive for the attack was not immediately known.
