Northeast Philadelphia Beating Victim Dies
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3)
Charges against an off-duty firefighter who allegedly beat a man on a Northeast Philadelphia street are expected to be upgraded Wednesday after the victim was taken off life-support.
Authorities say Gerard M. Shaffer and his son, also named Gerard, were arrested Monday in connection to the incident that occurred on April at 7:30 p.m. near Knights Road and Fairdale Avenue.
The Shaffer's were in their car when they allegedly got into an argument with 55-year-Mark Wallace who was standing at the intersection.
"What witnesses describe to police is, a 55-year-old complainant is walking down the street, crossing, (and) the two individuals become involved in a verbal altercation with this male overbelieve it or notwho had the right of way, the car or the pedestrian," said Philadelphia police spokesman Lt. Frank Vanore.
Vanore says the verbal altercation turned violent and Wallace was hospitalized with head injuries. On Tuesday, he was taken off of life support and passed away.
The Shaffer's were charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, conspiracy, and related offenses. Those charges are expected to be upgraded Wednesday.

Man Critical After Nicetown-Tioga Shooting

A man is in critical condition after a shooting in the Nicetown-Tioga section of Philadelphia overnight.
Police were called to the 3800 block of N. 15th Street after reports of a shooting at about 12:30 a.m.
A 34-year-old male was rushed from the scene to Temple University Hospital.
No arrests have been made. The shooting remains under investigation.

Gunfight in Darby
A drug-related gunfight broke out about 2:30 p.m. yesterday in Darby Borough, leaving bullet casings on a street near Park Lane Elementary School.
"They're playing Dodge City on one of the corners," said Police Chief Robert Smythe.
Police arrested three men traveling in an SUV who were believed to be the shooters, and confiscated guns, cash and drugs. One of the men had been shot in the leg and was hospitalized. No bystanders were hit, Smythe said.
Body found in river
The body of an unidentified man was recovered from the Schuylkill about noon yesterday. Police said the man, whose age and race were not yet known, was found near Passyunk Avenue.
Shooting victim ID'd
A man who was fatally shot Monday on Germantown Avenue near Collom Street in Germantown has been identified as Jalie Singleton, 20, who lived a block away.
Singleton was shot once in the chest shortly after 11 a.m. and was pronounced dead just before noon at Albert Einstein Medical Center.

Officers were called to the 3900 block of Folsom Street after reports of gunfire at about 11:30 p.m.
Police discovered a 66-year-old male shot twice in the head while sitting in a GMC van. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
No arrests have been made and a motive for the shooting is unknown.

A 25-year-old man was stabbed to death shortly after 8 last night in Northeast Philadelphia, police said. Cops arrived at an apartment on Longshore Avenue near Edmund Street, where they found the victim with a stab wound to the chest. He was taken to Aria Health -Torresdale Campus, where he later died, cops said. The victim's 36-year-old girlfriend was in custody last night, police said.

Bicyclist Shot, Killed In North Philadelphia

Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a bicyclist in North Philadelphia.
Authorities say a man riding his bike in the 1700 block of Bowers Street was gunned down at about 1 a.m. The unidentified victim was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital where he later died.
At this time there have been no arrests. Homicide detectives are investigating.

Police are investigating the discovery of an elderly woman apparently beaten to death and left in a home in Germantown.
Chopper 3 HD was over the scene on West Apsley Street near Wayne Junction.
Eyewitness News has learned that the 82-year-old woman from Nigeria, still unidentified, had been living with her 61-year-old son at his home for 4 years.
Police are questioning the son as a possible suspect in the beating.
Police remain at the scene conducting an investigation and gathering evidence.

Midday shooting in G'town
An unidentified 19-year-old man was shot and killed yesterday afternoon on Walnut Lane near Morton Street in Germantown, police said. The man was shot multiple times in the head, mouth, arm, torso and buttocks shortly after noon, police said. He was taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 2:47 p.m.
