A man who hid hunting knives in his pants to try to steal them from a western Michigan store tripped while fleeing and stabbed himself in the abdomen, police say.
The suspect was hospitalized after Monday night's attempted theft from a Meijer Inc. superstore in Grand Rapids and is expected to face a misdemeanor shoplifting charge, police say.
The wounds did not appear to be life-threatening, The Grand Rapids Press reported.
The man had put about $300 worth of hunting knives in his waistband, police told WZZM-TV. Police say he tried to leave the store, but Meijer employees confronted him and a scuffle followed.
The man then fell and was stabbed by the knives he had hidden in his clothing, police said. They said it happened about 5:40 p.m.
"The man was taken to the hospital," said Meijer spokesman Frank Giuliano. "We are cooperating with the investigation by police."
Police said the suspect has a record of retail fraud.
"I saw a man laying down on the mat by the carts, a knife by him with blood on the full blade of the knife," shopper Heather Dodd told WOOD-TV. "It was not a dull kitchen knife or a sharp butcher's knife, it was somewhere in between.
"Someone was holding him down so I just walked around him, grabbed my cart, made sure everything was OK and got out of the way."

Man Spits Gasoline On Lit Cigarette, Burns Self
BERLIN (AP) A German man in the northeastern town of Gross Godems was being treated for serious burns Monday after accidentally setting his apartment ablaze when he mixed up a bottle of gasoline with alcohol, police said.
The 56-year-old apparently grabbed the wrong bottle and took a swig from the gasoline flask, then spat it out when he realized his mistake.
The gas hit a lit cigarette, sparking the fire, police said.
I use to have a ball python and Albino Burmese python. I would go to the same store to pick up rats every week. I pulled up to the shot one day and there were cops everywhere. Turns out some guy try to steal a Green Tree Python (very dangerous). It was in the winter time, he stuck it in his jacket. The thing went to town by bitting the shit out of his neck, chest and stomach. Guess he started screaming and the workers had to come help him out. I laughed my ass off when I saw the guy crying.

A 20-year-old man is in hospital after almost losing an arm in a traffic incident at Bunbury in Western Australia.
Police say the man was a passenger in a utility when his left arm was sideswiped by a passing vehicle at the intersection of Blair Street and Sandridge Road.
The man had been waving to two girls who were washing a car at a local car wash.
Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident which occurred around 8:30pm AWDT.
Police say doctors are evaluating whether or not the arm should be amputated.

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- A man died after falling several stories in a Hollywood shopping mall while apparently attempting to slide down the banister of an escalator, authorities said.
The Hollywood & Highland complex includes the theater where the Academy Awards ceremony is held.
The victim's friends told officials investigating the Saturday night incident at the Hollywood & Highland Center that the man "had been drinking quite a bit," said Los Angeles police Officer J. Boyer.
Boyer said the man lost his balance and plunged several stories onto the steps of a moving lower-level escalator.
The man was not identified. He was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead from a head injury.

Grieving Hamilton mom Aggie Juszkiewicz is angry because her youngest son should've known better.
Her son, Michael, 33, had trespassed onto the train tracks and was listening to his iPod when he was killed Thursday night by a 13-car freight train.
"Am I angry? Yeah, I'm angry with Michael," Juszkiewicz said. "He's a smart kid. He's a very smart kid. He knows better. If he hadn't had that iPod on, he could've got out of the way."
Police said Michael had trespassed on to the CN Rail tracks near Lawrence and Ipswich Rds. in Steeltown after drinking at a friend's house. According to cops, Michael was lying down on the railroad tracks when he was hit at 11 p.m.
Cops were trying to find out if he had passed out from drinking, or if he lay down intentionally.
Either way, Juszkiewicz didn't move when the train approached, said Hamilton Police Det.-Const. Jeff Majik, adding the conductor desperately tried to stop the locomotive but didn't have enough distance.
"He saw him on the tracks, put on the brakes, and the train couldn't stop in time," Majik said.
Michael's mom said her son was "very easy-going" and that his interests included golf, snowboarding, and video games.
He was single, lived at home, and worked at a recycling plant.
Michael's older brother Adam, 36, was taking the news particularly bad, his mom said.
"We're holding our own, that's about all we can do," Juszkiewicz said, adding that although she's devastated by the loss, she couldn't help but feel frustration over her son's apparent obliviousness to the dangers of taking shortcuts along railway lines.
"I think the police officer that spoke this morning on the news saying to stay away from railroad tracks -- (that) is a very good piece of advice. Unfortunately, my son doesn't always listen," Juszkiewicz said.
Toxicology tests will be done to indicate how much Juszkiewicz had been drinking, but still, they won't prove if he actually passed out on the tracks, Majik said.

"We know that he was consuming alcohol and he was walking home, and we're trying to determine if he fell on the tracks or just laid down on the tracks," Majik said.
Majik also said police didn't know exactly where Juszkiewicz entered the tracks, but that signs warning against trespassing are posted along the entrances from the streets.
Police wanted to get the message out to the public that railway lines are private property and that anyone who uses them for shortcuts, hiking, or loitering, could be charged with trespassing.
A funeral service for Juszkiewicz will take place tomorrow from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Truscott Brown and Dwyer Funeral Home at 1309 King St. E. in Hamilton. Cremation has already taken place.

A SWISS man died when he fell from a hotel balcony during a spitting match with a friend, a Swiss newspaper has reported.
The daily Blick said the 29-year-old man took a run-up from inside the room so he could spit further, but lost his balance and plummeted 6.4m to the street below.
He died in hospital.
The man had suggested the contest when he and two friends returned from a disco to their hotel in Cadempino in Switzerland's Italian-speaking Ticino canton in the early hours.
One of the men went to sleep, but the two others decided to see who could spit furthest from the balcony of their room.

LONDON (AFP) - A British man has been branded a city's "dumbest criminal" after he posted more than 80 videos of himself committing various misdemeanours on YouTube, officials said Wednesday.

Andrew Kellett, 23, was banned from boasting about his criminal activities on the Internet after posting videos of himself and others taking Class A drugs, racing cars at high speeds and trespassing and shouting abuse.
He even filmed himself receiving a suspended sentence for an offence at Leeds Magistrates' Court in the northern English city.
On Tuesday, the court issued him with an interim anti-social behaviour order (Asbo) to stop him showing unlawful activities on the video-sharing website. Some of the videos were shown to magistrates as part of the prosecution's case.
"Kellett must be in the running to be Leeds' dumbest criminal. He has handed us the evidence against him on a plate," said Leeds councillor Les Carter.
"In the last three years, we have seen a 32 percent reduction in crime in Leeds. If more criminals were as obliging, the city would be even safer," he added.
Under the terms of the order, which lasts at least until next month, Kellett cannot post any image or description of unlawful activity on the Internet.
Kellett opposed the court's order, claiming he was merely a bystander filming and the offences would have happened regardless of whether he was at the scene or not.

Robber Caught After Leaving Cell Phone Behind
FREDERICK, Md. (AP)
Ever get that sinking feeling when you realize you've lost your cell phone? That's what happened to Carlos Williams -- after he allegedly robbed a bank.
Police say Williams left two huge clues at the scene of a bank robbery in Frederick in May -- his cell phone and his wallet. The items were sitting on the bank counter.
The wallet led to an address in Alexandria, Va., but Williams was able to elude capture. And he was apparently undeterred by his mistake. Police say he committed a similar robbery on Tuesday at a bank in Libertytown. Investigators knew immediately who was responsible.
The 28-year-old Williams and his 37-year-old girlfriend, Denise Smith, were arrested Thursday in District Heights, where they live.
Police say they recovered a BB gun used in the robberies and some of the cash.
