But don't know why... Busy through the shift... Inspecting, then getting a bunch of maintenance items completed.
A regular 368 day inspection/maint. on schedule. A 12 cyl. unit...2300-HP, turbocharged engine.
Unit was in decent shape, but had a broken side slider of the 'window-box,' which they use for switching...
One of the things they oughta do while it's Interbay is rewheel it. The wheels are getting down there, and there's no brake rigging ta deal with.
An easy job, IF we have the wheels/motors.
Anyway...

Snippy hangs his head in shame thinking of the evil tattooed head of a former TRF contributor. Snippy should have known. But....LAMCO never had any....

BN, and later BNSF continued with the 'window-box' thing... Nobody's ever explained the use of the things, and why they're still around. Parts for the glass, and the boxes are available.
And now that we have no cab-carpenter ta fix windows, numberboards, seats, conductor's desks, visors...knuckles, etc.
The shop's general had a little hissy-fit/go 'round over a union issue with our guy, and so the bigs abolished the position from days with weekends off, and reposted it as swing shift with some weird days off. So the guy bumped back to the car shop.
No car knocker bid to the roho. Gee, big surprise that!

Uke...this is what I know about the "window boxes". Number one is that a locomotive with window boxes "will not" fit through a rotary dump common to most coal/coke/sulphur off-load facilities. The old BN Interbay pool of locos always had to consider what motive power was to be assigned to the several jobs/locals that went thru the "dumpers" daily. Yeah I've heard of a few window boxes being ripped off.

They should have sent them to the dumper as soon as some soho dude decided to install one. They just put one on an engine I use because the mirror got broken. Fucking idiots.

Long time ago, buddy of mine was deadheading on a trailing unit, brakeman deadheading with him was asleep, had his head in the storm window box. They went in the pass somewhere and the brakeman raised up and started talking to him, C-R-A-S-H, train they were meeting had something sticking out and took that storm window right off.

Strange as it seems, a different foreman who was in charge of swing last night assigned Dave ta repair that box. After about four hours... The broken panel (one of three) was out. And a second unbroken panel was removed.
All that needed ta be done really, was remove the ONE broken panel.
Boom! Job done. But no... The communication between shift foremen failed again. The unit shoulda been out the door on day shift yesterday.
So it goes... Today is my Friday. Phew...

Tu has won. Cy? Jellis that Snippy has retained his position at LAMCO.
Cy laments his state of uncomaradeship away from the rails!
Uke suggests Cy follow Troll (That rat bastard) on PhaseBook.
Cheap alternative to real work.
