ROANOKE, VA. Southern Coal Corp. is recalling several hundred laid-off miners in Kentucky, Virginia and West Virginia and plans to hire 650 new workers.
Roanoke-based Southern Coal announced Tuesday that it has entered into a multiyear contract to supply coal to American Electric Power. The contract will allow it to restart mines idled earlier this year and to save 500 jobs.
Southern Coal is owned by the Justice Family, which includes Jim Justice, who also owns The Greenbrier resort in West Virginia.
"We are so happy to be able to save the jobs, and hire the 650 new miners, especially at this time of the year. We hope this will make the holidays a little better for those affected," Jim Justice and his son, Jay Justice, said in the company's news release.
Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell and West Virginia Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin hailed Tuesday's announcement as good news for the workers and their states' economies.
"Today's announcement is a victory for the hard-working men and women and their families in the coal counties of Kentucky, West Virginia and Virginia. The number of jobs saved and created by this multi-year agreement will benefit our region for generations to come," Beshear said.
Tomblin said the contract means 1,700 jobs for the region, and it will have a large impact on communities' continued economic growth.
McDonnell said coal is an important part of Virginia's "all of the above" domestic energy strategy.
Southern Coal also has operations in Alabama and Tennessee. The company said it expects to produce 9 million tons of coal in 2013.

They cant dig it out the ground fast enuff around here. They told us after the bills are paid its $1,000
a car profit. Its why we have got close to the max in bonus last couple years, so they told us.
Rite now they are putting in a tail track so they can remove a bridge over the Gateway project.
This tailtrack is long enuff to allow placing new tracks into a powerplant that up to now is getting
coal, limestone, and some other mineral by truck. Plus hauling the ash away.
We mostly had coal to Baltimore and Philly.(till Freddie fawwked them over too many times by losing the train)
(Naww..heh heh Freddie said water aint deep enuff for the ships?)
Had powder river dirt going to Jacksonville FL till they got tired of trying to burn brown shit, and changed back to a
good hearty burning Appalation black. Plus coal for a couple other powerplants down south.
Shippin coal to Newport News VA several times a week.
The coal going to curtis bay in Baltimore has slowed somewhat until March they say, a ship hit the coal pier
and now they can't reach the whole way out to load a ship, they can fill it halfway, then they gotta pull out and back in
to fill the other half.
Would ya like ta be the shipping companys insurance company payin that bill??
Good thing it wasnt a coal scow from buttfuckistan.
In the past year they have opened 2 new mines out around Johnstown (NS musta pissed off somebody out there
the old Gonerail southfork secondary isnt so busy these days.

1. Central KY recently elected a Repub congressman based on a one issue campaign--coal. There is not one coal mine in this district. The strange part is that he defeated a Dem named Chandler. There is lots of coal money buying political power in this state.

If it's anything like the WV secondary, they've been deep-fucked. It's not the best route, to be sure, but they purposely run hoppers back around them and pay an extra crew just to avoid the WV Secondary.
Steam/Utility coal is in the shitter, but we are moving strong volumes of export coal right now.

Why do they hate the Secondary so bad, a line that Cy has some familiarity with, from watching it from the time he was a mere child and it was a New York Central route, with a good amount of traffic?
Mere child, uh, yeah, six, could see it from my first grade classroom.
