Little did Michael Douglas suspect that his recent interview with Britains Guardian newspaper would lead to an international brouhaha after the Oscar winner was quoted as blaming his throat cancer battle on being exposed to the HPV virus while engaging in oral sex.
After the virus comments went viral, the actors publicist attempted to tamp down the uproar by claiming Douglas never said that was the particular cause of his particular cancer, but merely that it was one thing that could cause throat cancer.
That has led the Guardian to go on the offensive and post a 32-second audio recording of Douglas remark on its website. When reporter Xan Brooks asked the Behind the Candelabra star if he attributed his cancer to having overloaded your system with drugs, smoking, drink, Douglas clearly answered, No. No. Ah, without getting too specific, this particular cancer is caused by something called HPV, which actually comes about from cunnilingus.
While both Michaels ex-wife, Diandra Douglas, and his current wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones, have made it very clear to friends they are not carriers of HPV, they both are said to be very upset by the whole controversy considering it brings back memories of Douglas many years of rampant womanizing. The actor, now 68 and reportedly happily married to Zeta-Jones, was among the first stars showcased as being treated for sexual addiction.
At an American Cancer Society event Monday night, Douglas further attempted to quiet the furor. Ive become, I think, in the past 24 hours a sort of poster boy for oral cancer, and just so you all understand, I think we would all love to know where our cancer comes from.

Michael Douglas had tongue cancer, not throat cancer, it turns out.
The newly minted Emmy winner revealed the fact that he purposefully fudged the truth about his 2010 diagnosis on a British daytime show yesterday.
"This was right before I had to go on a big tour for Wall Street (2), so we kind of said there's no way we can cancel the tour and say we don't feel well You've got to tell them," Douglas told Samuel L. Jackson on ITV's This Morning, as part of Male Cancer Awareness Week. "I said you've just got to come out and just tell them I've got cancer and that's that."
"But the surgeon said, 'Let's just say it's throat cancer.' I said 'OK, you don't want to say it's tongue cancer?', I said 'Why's that?' and he said, 'Well, if you really want to know why, if we do have to have surgery it's not going to be pretty. You'll lose part of you jaw and your tongue and all of that stuff.' So I said, 'OK sure.' "
