WESTLAND, MI -- The Westland man struck and killed by a passenger train Sunday evening walked around the railroad crossing gate arms, witnesses tell police.
"Preliminary witness statements (indicated) that the gates were down and that he walked around the gates," said Westland Deputy Chief Brian Miller on Monday afternoon. "And those Amtrak passenger trains are ... much faster than those freight trains."
The Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim as 37-year-old Robert Turner. His death has been ruled accidental due to multiple blunt-force injuries.
WDIV-TV, Channel 4 News reported the man was pushing a bike across the tracks at the time of the collision.
The train was transporting 104 passengers from Chicago to Pontiac. They were removed and bused to their destination while the investigation was conducted.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Another bad one in California. Mom and young daughter killed in 'trapped' SUV as Amtrak passes through at 79 MPH. Normal operating speed.
