In North America railroading "flagging a crossing" all you need to do is stop traffic and jump back onboard locomotive. The "thinking" is once a train is crossing the street that is enough for someone/thing to not cross tracks because there is a train in the way. On other lines of the Indian Railways they run 100mph with 30-40 car passenger trains so they must have employees manning the crossings. Someday I hope the Indian Railways can advance past the engineer having to hold green flag out the window all trip. And have a locomotive with a toilet.
No automatic grade crossing gates. Nope! Hand operated by an employee stationed at the crossing. Sometimes*.
