I never met anyone who had Tourettes Syndrome... But when I was a kid the parents took us to a 'circus' that had a real, live 'freak-show.' And that's what it was called, no lie.

That was in the early 1950's, and PC hadn't even been thought of... Damn near everything was open, and out there... Except sexual orientation. Nobody admitted to being 'gay,' or if ya did say you were gay, it just meant you were happy.

And the "N" word was verbotten! Everything else, and everybody else was fair game. Catholics, Jews, Peurto Ricans, the Irish, and Italians.

Back then Danny woulda been in a freak show, of some small, podunk circus, outa the South.

They do the rounds of smaller towns, church fairs and the like. Danny would be called "The Cursing Genius," or somesuch... People would pay a quarter ta see the freaks. Ya couldn't go in if ya didn't pay... Really small kids weren't allowed...but my old man always slipped the guy an extra couple bucks. and he just looked the other way as we slipped in!

We were scared shitless [my sister and me] of the 'bearded' lady...'cause she was an ugly one! They had midgets too. One who was so stubby, and tattooed from head ta toe! Fish-man was weird. Dog Boy. Skeleton man.
The Ape man...

But nobody like Danny! Man, he'd've been hit back then! Nobody woulda thought anything about it in the freak lineup, but they'd sure talk about 'im later...at home! And we did...at school! If ya didn't see a freak show when you were growin' up, ya just weren't cool! And ya never would be!
