Homicide charges sent to court

12:00 PM EDT, July 16, 2008
William Torres

A Lehigh County prison inmate testified Wednesday he met William Torres of Allentown in the intake unit of the prison in January and warned him he shouldn't be bragging about having shot two men outside a grocery store at Fourth and Allen streets in December.

The inmate, Guillermo Jose Rivera, was arrested on Jan. 25 on a state parole violation and was housed in the same unit as Torres, who had been arrested the same day. Torres had just finished being interviewed by an Allentown detective about the killings of Carlos F. Collazo, 32, and Jorge Luis Camacho, 36, both of Allentown.

Torres told Rivera that during the police interview, he lied to the detective by saying it was a self-defense shooting, according to testimony at Torres' preliminary hearing.

Rivera testified Torres said he got out of a car and began shooting at the men on Dec. 12 outside the Dayoub Produce International Grocery, but never said why he did it.

Attorney Eric Dowdle, representing Torres, argued that Rivera is only testifying because he's getting a deal from prosecutors, but District Judge Robert Halal ruled enough evidence existed to send the homicide charges against Torres to Lehigh County Court.

Halal dismissed drug charges against Torres. However, prosecutors said they are planning on re-filing them.

According to testimony at the hearing, Camacho was shot first and ran into the grocery store, where he collapsed and died. Collazo was found lying on the sidewalk outside and later died.

Addressing Rivera, Dowdle said he must have seen the case as a get-out-of-jail-free card.

"You could hardly contain yourself with excitement because here's a guy who got you out of jail," he said. "You must be happy?"

Rivera responded, "I'm not sad, but I'm not happy," he said. "But I think I'm doing the right thing."

He later testified he knew one of the victims and was upset.

I'd say that wasn't a very nice thing to say about a bag full of hammers.
