waste of fuel on the NS Reading Line.
Author: jim6300loco

What an interesting observation My Railfaning buddy Beertrain and I made this Morning about 11:30 this morning on the NS Reading Line.
We were practicing our usual Sunday morning Railfanning expedition when we noticed 19G (Westbound) coming to a Stop just west of Fleetwood Pa. at a local cemetery. A young nicely dressed man got off the train, with a bag and stood there while the 19G pulled out using All it's Horsepower(Sounded neat!)and took off for Reading, Pa. About 10 or 15 minutes later the 34 M (Eastbound) came to a stop and the nicely dressed man got on the 34M and headed east.(once again great sounds and visuals!)
My guess this was a lower level management type (Trainmaster) Inspecting the Train Crews on the 2 respective Trains. It is also my observation and conclusion that this was a waste of precious Diesel Fuel.
My thoughts on the whole matter is that if NS(or any other Railroad) wants to inspect their crews that is quite OK.However it is my opinion that they should make their switching of trains at terminals where the Train was going to stop anyway instead of wasting highly expensive Fuel by making the train start unnecessarily twice. Diesel is the same as NO 2 fuel oil. the same stuff we use to heat our homes. This is one of the reasons we will have to pay over $4.00 a gal to heat our homes this winter. Thank you Norfolk Southern!

I hate ta piss on yer party there pal, but what the railroads pay for diesel-fuel ain't hurting your purchases of #2 heating oil for this, or next winter's price per...

Nope. Why you may ask. I'll tell ya why! Railroads 'hedge' when it comes ta purchasing fuel on the open market. That is they purchase [and pay] for diesel years in advance. Typically three to five years ahead of delivery.

This 'locks in' a pre-determined price, and NOT in gallons. Nope. Railroads typically pay for pounds, or tons of liquid fuel.

I can remember a time, not very long ago, where BN paid 55 cents per, as opposed to $2.12 at the pump for 'motor fuel' diesel for trucks, and cars.

Number 2 heating oil was about 66 cents then.

Ya shoulda bought and paid for your heating oil ten years ago. But nope...like everybody else, you'd rather complain in my forum.

Ya big crybaby!

Sigh! That's what trains do. They go and they stop.
Nothing has changed in a 150 years.
