CLEVELAND (AP)Cliff Lees season of redemption rolls on.

Lee, who at this time one year ago was packing his bags for the minor leagues, stayed on pace to become Clevelands first 20-game winner in 34 years and the Indians ended an eight-game losing streak inside the AL Central by holding off the slumping Minnesota Twins 5-4 on Friday night.

The Twins lost their fifth straight as well as center fielder Carlos Gomez, who left the game with a back injury and spent a few hours in the hospital before being released.

Lee (14-2) went just 5-8 and was demoted to Triple-A Buffalo on July 27 last year, both a low point and crossroad of a career that seemed to be in jeopardy.

But the 29-year-old, who started for the AL in the All-Star game, became baseballs first 14-game winner and avenged one of his two losses this season. The Twins defeated the left-hander on July 6.

Spotted a four-run lead in the first inning against Livan Hernandez (10-7), Lee allowed six hits and struck out 10 in eight dominant innings without a walk to improve to 6-0 at home. He retired the side in order five times, needing just seven pitches to do so in both the fourth and fifth.

The Indians havent had a 20-game winner since Hall of Famer Gaylord Perry went 21-13 in 1974, but thats the last thing on Lees mind.

I dont put a number on my goals, he said. I dont care if I get the win or anything else as long as the Indians get the win.

The Twins didnt do much against Lee, but climbed within 5-4 in the ninth against reliever Masa Kobayashi on Justin Morneaus two-run homer.

Joe Mauer led off with a single and Morneau, who won the recent All-Star Home Run Derby, launched his 16th homer to right. Delmon Young doubled, forcing Indians manager Eric Wedge to bring in Rafael Perez.

Pinch-hitter Mike Redmond hit a liner that first baseman Ryan Garko grabbed with a diving back-hander. Perez got Brendan Harris on a comebacker and then retired Nick Punto on a sharp grounder that went through his legs and was grabbed by second baseman Asdrubal Cabrera, who threw to first to give Perez his second career save.

Cabrera entered in the eighth, replacing Jamey Carroll, who left with a strained left hamstring.

As the ball skipped under him, Perez thought the game was tied.

I thought it was going through, Perez said through an interpreter. I didnt know Cabrera was there.

The Twins, who came in trailing the division-leading Chicago White Sox by 2 1/2 games, fell to 0-4 on their six-game trip to New York and Cleveland.

Gomez was immobilized, carted from the field and transported to Lutheran Hospital after crashing into the outfield wall at full speed while making a spectacular catch in the first. The 22-year-old sustained a lower back injury, but was back in the ballpark 10 minutes after the final out.

I never had so much pain in my life, said Gomez, who walked gingerly into the clubhouse. When it happened, I was scared. I didnt know what I did, but I thought I broke something. I ran into it full speed.

Kelly Shoppach drove in two runs and Franklin Gutierrez homered for the Indians, who went 0-8 on a trip to Chicago, Minnesota and Detroit from June 30-July 9, a stretch when the defending Central champions dropped 10 straight and were forced to trade ace CC Sabathia.

Gomez was injured making a lunging catch and smashing into the padded wall in left-center.

After a long sprint, Gomez jumped when he reached the warning track and snagged Ben Franciscos drive before slamming into the wall with his right side. As Gomez writhed around grabbing his back in pain, he alertly flipped the ball to left fielder Young but Sizemore tagged up and scored from second.

I felt the warning track, I jumped and the next thing I knew, I hit the wall and was on the ground. I was in pain, but I knew I had to throw the ball, so I did, Gomez said. They gave me an MRI and said the test was OK. I think they said I should be OK, but I have pain now. We will see.

Gomez was acquired along with three pitchers in the trade that sent Johan Santana to the New York Mets on Feb. 2.

Cleveland Indians pitcher Rafael Perez, right, is congratulated by catcher Kelly Shoppach after the Indians defeated the Minnesota Twins 5-4 in a baseball game, Friday, July 25, 2008, in Cleveland.

He was replaced in center by Denard Span, who moved over from right. Moments later, Span spookily crashed into the wall only feet from where Gomez hit it while trying to catch Shoppachs shot. Span couldnt hold on as he made contact and Shoppach wound up with a two-run double to put Cleveland ahead 4-0.

Gutierrezs fourth homerand first since May 27off Hernandez gave the Indians a 5-0 lead in the second.

Notes

Only three Indians have started a season 14-2 or better. Jim Bagby was 14-2 in 1920, Johnny Allen 15-1 in 1937 and Perry 15-1 in 74. Wedge is thrilled to see the success Sabathia has enjoyed since being traded to Milwaukee, where he is 4-0 and pitched three consecutive complete games. Good for him, man, Wedge said. With the exception of the opposition, I root for baseball players. He was part of the family here. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said he hasnt heard anything, about OF Michael Cuddyer, out since June 28 with a strained left index finger. The Indians have homered in 11 straight games.

TORONTO (AP)Being the American League leader in wins and ERA isnt likely to go to Cliff Lees head.

Lee worked eight shutout innings for his AL-leading 16th win and the Cleveland Indians completed a three-game sweep, beating the Toronto Blue Jays 4-0 on Sunday.

Its just easier when youre having success, Lee said of his superb season. Things go easier, you have more fun. Things flow better when youre having success. Im going to continue to just ride it out.

Even as he carves up the competition, Lee makes sure not to get caught up thinking about a 20-win season or winning the AL Cy Young Award.

You hear it all the time, youve got to keep your mind in the moment, Lee said. Its easier said than done, but its something youve got to be conscious of. If you feel yourself thinking about the past, or trying to think about the eighth inning in the fourth inning, youre in trouble already.

Lee (16-2) lowered his ERA to 2.45, moving him ahead of Oaklands Justin Duchscherer (2.51) for the major league lead. He won his fifth straight decision and has not lost since a 4-3 defeat at Minnesota on July 6. He gave up eight hitsseven of them singleswith no walks. He struck out one.

He was in control throughout, manager Eric Wedge said. Did a good job moving his fastball around, made some adjustments as the game wore on. Overall, another real good day for Cliff.

The left-hander is responsible for 16 of his teams 52 wins (31 percent), the highest percentage of any major league pitcher.

He always makes me look like I know what Im doing, catcher Kelly Shoppach said. I can call any pitch and he can execute it.

Lee threw 104 pitches, including 83 for strikes, and had only one three-ball count.

Hes a fun pitcher to play behind, outfielder Grady Sizemore said. He attacks the hitters, he goes out there and works the plate. Hes been doing it all year. Its fun to watch. I hope he can continue this stretch and finish strong.

The victory was Lees first in seven starts against Toronto, the only AL opponent he had never beaten.

Lee pitched nine shutout innings against Toronto on May 12, but the Blue Jays won 3-0 in the 10th against reliever Rafael Betancourt.

Rafael Perez wrapped this one up in the ninth to help Cleveland win for the 15th time in 25 games.

Shin-soo Choo went 3-for-4 with three doubles for the Indians, who finished 6-1 in the season series against Toronto, outscoring the Blue Jays 34-8.

Torontos Vernon Wells returned after missing 26 games with a strained hamstring and started as the designated hitter, but finished 0-for-4.

Good to be back, bad game to be back, Wells said. Felt good some at-bats, a little tardy on other ones.

Scott Rolen (left shoulder) was scratched from the starting lineup and placed on the 15-day disabled list after the game. Rolen revealed July 30 that his surgically repaired shoulder was causing him pain, and has missed five of 11 games since.

Outfielder Kevin Mench, originally optioned to Triple-A when Wells was activated, will take Rolens place on the roster.

The Indians jumped on Blue Jays right-hander Scott Richmond (0-2) with a two-run first. Sizemore singled and came around to score when Adam Lind mishandled David Delluccis double to left. One out later, Dellucci scored on Jhonny Peraltas RBI single.

Torontos bullpen stirred and pitching coach Brad Arnsberg visited the mound after Choo doubled Peralta to third, but Richmond got Ryan Garko and Franklin Gutierrez on grounders.

Cleveland made it 3-0 in the third when Choo hit a two-out double and scored on Garkos single.

Making his third major league start, Richmond gave up three runs and nine hits in five innings. He walked none, hit two batters and struck out five.

The Indians added one more in the eighth against reliever John Parrish. Sizemores two-out single scored Garko from second, but Alex Rios threw out Gutierrez at home plate as he tried to score from first. The assist was Rios major league-leading 13th of the season.

Notes

Shoppach broke his bat over his thigh after striking out to strand runners at first and third in the fourth. Shoppach fanned again in the ninth and has struck out eight times in 12 at-bats. Toronto has lost the season series to Cleveland five years in a row. Three of Torontos eight shutout losses this year have come against the Indians.
