Pedestrian struck by train

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio Authorities are investigating the death of a male pedestrian struck by a train in an area where police have struggled to keep pedestrians off the tracks.

A "younger" white male was struck at about 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 10, by a train traveling 35 to 40 miles per hour between Old Mill Road and the Masonic Temple grounds, Sgt. Dustin White of the Clark County Sheriff's Office said. The name of the victim will be released after officials notify relatives.

Reportedly, four people were on a tressel a bridge for train tracks to cross water when the conductor saw them, blew the train's horn and started to brake, according to White.

Three of the people jumped but the fourth did not get of the tracks in time and was dragged an estimated 200 yards after the train struck him. Witnesses reported that he was afraid to jump, said White.

"It's high up, it's lengthy," he said. "It can be pretty scary up there."

A witness who tried to get to the victim to help injured his back and was treated and released.

The area has been a problem for authorities trying to keep people off the dangerous tressel, said White.

"It is an ongoing problem here and a lot of it is because of the accessibility problem of getting to it to enforce it," he said.

Authorities will continue investigating the accident, including whether alcohol could have been a factor and talking to the train conductor and employees, said White.

Wow, Cy. What's it like to work with a conductor that actually shows initiative and blows the whistle and starts to brake on his own? All of our guys just would sit there and if there eyes were open, maybe say something if they could find the time to peel themselves away from their cell phones, newspapers or gameboys.

Be glad they got "brake" spelled correctly, I guess.

Thought about e-mailing that reporter and telling her about it but do you think I'd hurt her feelings by doing that? Perhaps that newspaper has no editors, either. We all know that newspapers aren't doing very well these days.

Dog, I sure wish I could answer your question but I can't. Who among us can? I will say that I have been fortunate enough this entire year to work with good conductors, with nary a sinker in the bunch. Don't know how long my luck will hold out, though. Like Snippy once said in another context, sooner or later you come crashing back down to earth.

Jumping off that bridge is what kids do in that town. Its one of those summertime things. Kinda odd though, a train traveling in that direction doesnt exactly sneak up on you.

Trespassing on trestles dangerous, officials say
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio Railroad officials expressed frustration over incidents like the death of a 22-year-old West Carrollton man struck by a train Sunday on a train trestle they say he was trespassing on, the News-Sun reports.

"You wouldn't go play on an airport runway or.. on an interstate highway," said Steven Kulm, director of public affairs for the Federal Railroad Administration. "But people seem to think it's OK to do that on an active railroad track."

Matthew J. Johnson, 22, of West Carrollton, was killed at about 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 10, on a trestle a stretch of tracks that crosses over water between Old Mill Road and the Masonic Home grounds. Johnson had been on the trestle with three other people, including one relative, when a train approached, according to Sgt. Christopher Clark of the Clark County Sheriff's Office.

The three others jumped about 50 feet from the trestle to the water below but told investigators that Johnson had been afraid to jump and instead tried to outrun the train down the length of the trestle to safety. He was struck by the train traveling approximately 35 to 40 miles per hour and killed, said Sgt. Dustin White.

The tracks are owned by Norfolk Southern Corp. Rudy Husband, a spokesman for the company said he was not familiar with the history of the tracks but said that the area is "private property." He declined to make any further comment.

The majority of train-related deaths each year are trespassing deaths, Kulm said. Combined with deaths of passengers in vehicles struck by a train, crossing and trespassing deaths make up 95 percent of train-related fatalities.

"We definitely don't want people on that trestle, and if we catch them there, they're going to be charged," said Clark.

Trestles can be problematic for officials, he said.

"Many times people use the trestle not only to walk across the river, but they hang out on it," he said. "We've had cases where people are fishing off the railroad."

Last year, two young girls each lost part of their leg while sunbathing on a trestle, he said.

Clark County has approximately one trespassing train death each year, according to the FRA.

"People don't think of it as being as dangerous," said Clark.

The trestle where Johnson was killed illustrates many of the challenges of enforcing trespassing laws. It is accessible to pedestrians traveling down or along the river but hard for officers to reach because no roads lead directly to the stretch.

"Railroad tracks generally run through unpopulated, rural areas, and they're easily accessible and that's an issue," Clark said.

The FRA commissioned a report in March to study the characteristics of people who trespass on train tracks and why.

The 83-page report reveals that males trespass on train tracks more often than females and that the 40- to 44-year-old male is the most common trespasser. Males in Johnson's age group 20- to 24-years old also have high rates of trespassing on railroads.

I thought Rudy knows EVERYTHING about Norfolk Southern. I'm so disappointed.

40 to 44? Really? Wonder where that study was done. Well, I remember when I ran over the hunter's beagle, that guy was probably in that age group.

Still, I find that hard to believe.
