BALTIMORE - An Amtrak employee who died Wednesday (Aug. 20) after he was struck by an Acela Express train has been identified as a Baltimore County resident, a railroad spokeswoman told the Baltimore Sun.
Karina Romero, the spokeswoman, said Steven Rychwalski, 22, of White Marsh, an inspector for the communications and signals department, was working on the tracks north of the New Carrollton station shortly after 5 a.m. when he was struck by a train that had left Washington's Union Station for Boston. There were no injuries aboard the train.
Romero said Rychwalski, who worked for the railroad since 2005, was airlifted to an area hospital, where he died a short time later. She said it was not unusual for Amtrak employees to be working on the tracks, but did not know exactly what Rychwalski was doing when he was struck.
Romero said the train stopped and remained at the scene until about 7:30 a.m. and that the accident is being investigated by Amtrak police.
