Tanker Truck, Train Collision Causes Explosion; Kills 3, Injures 1 Near Medford, OK

Linda Young - AHN Editor

Medford, OK (AHN) - A collision between a tanker truck and a train near Medford Friday morning killed at least three people, caused an explosion and left at least two of the train's engines burning.

One person was airlifted to the hospital by helicopter after the collision near a natural gas plant.

A Union Pacific train collided with a tanker truck that might have been carrying propane, according to reports.

The collision occurred at a crossing on U.S. Highway 81 near Medford.

And this:

Associated Press - August 29, 2008 2:55 PM ET

MEDFORD, Okla. (AP) - Two people were killed when a tanker truck carrying propane exploded after being hit by a Union Pacific train near Medford this morning.

Garfield County Emergency Management Director Mike Honigsberg says both victims were aboard the train.

The truck driver was flown to a hospital in Wichita, Kansas, with third-degree burns to at least half his body.

The accident occurred about 9:20 on State Highway 81 just south of Medford in Grant County and caused a power outage in most of Medford.

The explosion blew part of the tanker more than a quarter-mile.

Honigsberg called the train crew heroes because they were able to hit the emergency brake before the crash.

He says without the brake the train couldn't have been stopped until it reached Enid nearly 35 miles away.

The train was traveling from Wichita, Kansas, to Fort Worth, Texas.

I daresay that train would have stopped before it got to Enid.  I don't know about you guys but this has always been something that scared me.  I nearly got a gasoline truck once and that was exciting enough.

Also, found this later today.

It's one of the two things we've all had nightmares about.....!!

Gas trucks and school buses......

All the old heads said to never bighole it if you're going to hit a gas truck, try to push yourself thru it.....

I don't think it really matters at that point.....

I can't imagine the horror that crew experienced........

I knew an engineer and fireman that hit a schoolbus but the driver was the only person in it. They didn't know that when they first saw it.

Add cement mixers.

My thoughts go out to the families and my anger boils that we live in a society where facilities like this are not required to be protected by active crossing warning devices. It is a cost they should bear for doing business. Tsk, tsk, that crossing will get them now.

*wow*

Gravel trucks. Loaded grain trucks. Yes, and as you said, cement mixers. I've got stories about each and every one of those, people I knew, a couple who didn't survive. Pisses me off just thinking about it.

Troll.....They required us to watch that video at safety marathons last year....

After it was over the two non-working, UNION, division safety sucks, had the audacity to criticize the crew...... said they were inattentive and should have spotted the open switch sooner.......

Should of spotted the open switch sooner? Glad I wasn't there, the type I am, after I cracked at least one of them, I would of said something like they should have seen my fist sooner.

In our part of dark territory, only "possible meeting points" are equipped with a big target that says  "POS!" in bright reflective color....All other spur tracks and industries still have the tiny, old, non reflective red circle that you wouldnt see until you are about 20 ft from it if it was against you....

I've seen that video a pile of times tu. They always include the other one about the train fouling the siding, and another slams into it.

Heh, they still talk about the time two UTU safetysuckasses were doing safety dog-and-pony whore shows in the washrooms and criticized their own local chairman. The guy was seriously fucked up/crippled with an on-duty injury, for "inattentiveness" that caused his own injury working in an ice storm.

Snippy went crazy. They got mad as he asked over and over why they were there, "Is it for the money or safety?" "Are you Company Men now?" They headed for their cars and Snippy chased them down the road asking the same thing and, "Who told you he wasn't paying attention? Did you ask him? Well? Well?" Can you believe these two rat suckasses still don't talk to Snippy seven years later? Awwwwwwwwwwwwww. Boo fucking hoo!

Add log trucks to the list.

I noticed when the engineer dumped the air, basically
it had no effect. Is a dash-9 easy to jump from when
certain death is 10 seconds away?
