Slumping Brewers fire manager YostUpdated: September 15, 2008, 3:51 PM EST

The Milwaukee Brewers fired manager Ned Yost on Monday, hoping to pull out of another late-season slump that has jeopardized the team's chance of making the playoffs for the first time since 1982.

Season-saving move? The fading Brewers fired manager Ned Yost with just 12 games remaining and the team still tied for the wild card lead in the NL. And you know what? Ken Rosenthal thinks this move just might save their season. Third-base coach Dale Sveum will take over as interim manager for the remainder of the season. The Brewers have lost seven of eight and fallen into a tie with Philadelphia for the NL wild-card lead.

At 83-67, the Brewers have just 12 games to rebound.

Milwaukee came into this month with a 5 1/2-game lead in the wild card, but since has lost 11 of 14 including a four-game sweep completed by the Phillies over the weekend.

Milwaukee was idle Monday, and was scheduled to begin a three-game series with the Central-leading Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on Tuesday.

"This was a very difficult move to make, and we appreciate all of the work that Ned has done to develop this team into a contender," general manager Doug Melvin said in a statement. "In the end, this was a collaborative decision made to put our club in the best position for the final two weeks of the season."

The team has scheduled a news conference Monday night in Chicago. Yost did not immediately return a message left on his cell phone by The Associated Press.

Bench coach Ted Simmons, once considered a potential successor should Yost be fired, has been reassigned to an "advisory role," making his long-term status with the team unclear.

The Brewers came into 2008 with even higher hopes for the playoffs, and received a major boost when they made a trade with Cleveland for ace CC Sabathia on July 7. That acquisition certainly has worked out, as the reigning AL Cy Young winner is 9-0 in 13 starts with six complete games and a 1.59 ERA.

But little else not the other starters, the shaky bullpen or a home run-happy offense that has gone colder than a Wisconsin winter is working for Milwaukee these days.

Now Yost has paid the price.

Yost became a lightning rod for fan criticism in Milwaukee in recent years as he stubbornly stuck by players mired in slumps and refused to criticize them in public even when they get in shoving matches in the dugout during games.

And the Brewers haven't looked like contenders in some of their biggest series this season, including a three-game sweep by Boston in May, a four-game sweep by Chicago at home in July and the just-completed four-game sweep by Philadelphia.

Yost was in his sixth season as the Brewers' manager. When Milwaukee hired him from Atlanta after the 2002 season, the team was in the midst of four straight seasons with 94 losses or more.

Under Yost, the young Brewers improved to records of 81-81, 75-87 and 83-79 in the past three seasons a significant improvement for a franchise that hadn't had a winning record since 1992. But Yost seemingly couldn't get the Brewers to take the next step.

Yost spent 12 years on the Braves' coaching staff with Bobby Cox, and Atlanta won division titles every year Yost was there except the strike-shortened 1994 season.

Baseball did good when they came up with the
"Wild Card" for the divisional playoffs. It's been
an amazing battle for "best in show" for many
years now, a battle that gets more attention than
the division leaders. I usually ignore what the national
league does all season because I live in AL territory.
Milwaukee, Philly, Mets, don't matter to me. The
crap shoot begins in a couple weeks with Mercury in
Retrograde. Yee-haw!.

I think they nipped the Nedster a little too late into his annual September dive. Not sure about the astrological data, Krink, but Zambrano pitching a no-no against the Asstros in MILLER FUCKING PARK was all the sign this Cheesehead needed.

CHICAGO (AP)Not even CC Sabathia could stop the Milwaukee Brewers late-season slide. A managerial change didnt work either.

The Chicago Cubs moved closer to their second straight division title Tuesday night, becoming the first NL team to beat the Brewers big left-hander and spoiling Dale Sveums debut as interim manager with a 5-4 victory.

Its very special. Everybody knows who CC is, Chicagos Alfonso Soriano said.

Sabathia (9-1), acquired by the Brewers on July 7, had won 12 straight decisions overall, dating to a June 5 loss to Texas when he was still pitching for Cleveland. He gave up four runs and nine hits in seven innings, including Sorianos 29th homer in the seventh.

Sveum replaced Ned Yost, who was fired Monday in a shocking move by a team that is still 15 games over .500 with 11 left. But the Brewers late-season struggles wont go away. They lost for the 12th time in 15 games and fell one-half game behind New York for the NL wild card.

Weve been in that position for quite a long time and we lost it tonight. We have 11 games left to get it back, Sveum said, calling his first managerial experience in the big leagues actually kind of cool.

I had a lot of anxiety all day long, as well as yesterday. Right as the game started it seemed that everything calmed down.

Prince Fielder hit his 31st and 32nd homers for the Brewers, a prodigious two-run shot off Dempster in the sixth that cleared the right field bleachers and a solo shot off Carlos Marmol leading off the eighth. In the ninth with two on, the Milwaukee slugger was struck out by Kerry Wood to end the game.

Henry Blancos pinch-hit RBI single in the eighth pushed Chicagos lead to 5-3 and it turned out to be a big run.

Milwaukees Ray Durham hit a two-out RBI double off Wood in the ninth to make it 5-4 before Ryan Brauns infield single put runners at the corners and brought up Fielder.

On a 3-2 pitch with Wrigley Field roaring, Wood got a called third strike past Fielder to get his 31st save in 38 chances.

He made a good pitch, Fielder said. Hes one of the best closers and it was fun going at each other. Its part of the game. Somebody has to win.

Fielder was called out on a breaking ball, the 10th pitch of his at-bat.

I kind of got away with one there. It was a pretty good pitch to hit. I think he was geared up for fastballs, Wood said. With Fielder up there, there is a threat of making a mistake and obviously weve seen what he can do with those.

Ryan Dempster (16-6) pitched six innings for his career-high 16th win as the Cubs reduced their magic number for clinching their second straight NL Central title to four.

Thats huge, to beat a guy who hadnt lost in our league this year. It feels good to accomplish something like that, Dempster said.

I know how big a game it is, Sabathia said. I think from here on out every game is a big game. The season doesnt end tomorrow. We still have 11 games left to try to get in. Tonight I needed to be better than I was.

Following two dominating performances by Cubs starters, Dempster allowed two runs and seven hits in six innings. He walked one and struck nine.

Carlos Zambrano pitched a no-hitter against Houston on Sunday at Milwaukees Miller Park, and Ted Lilly had a no-hitter until the seventh on Monday before combining with three relievers on a one-hitter against the Astros.

Dempster allowed a first-inning double to Fielder and then retired 11 straight before Craig Counsell singled in the fifth. Jason Kendall followed with a single and the Brewers loaded the bases when Dempster fumbled Sabathias sacrifice for an error.

But Mike Cameron, moved into the leadoff spot to shake up the moribund offense, then bounced into a double play to end the inning on a play that brought Sveum out for his first argument. His beef with first base umpire Joe West was apparently that first baseman Derrek Lee pulled his foot off the bag while taking the throw from third baseman Aramis Ramirez.

West ejected Milwaukee first base coach Ed Sedar before the start of the top of the sixth.

Soriano doubled leading off in the first, moved up on a grounder and scored easily when Lees long drive to center went off Camerons glove for another double.

Ryan Theriot and Lee had consecutive singles to start the Chicago third before Ramirez lined a two-run double into the left field corner for a 3-0 lead.

Notes

Dempster is 13-3 at Wrigley Field, the most home wins by a Cub since Fergie Jenkins won 13 in 1971. Fielder has 12 multihomer games in his career.
