So, they can't call us while we're moving but the person not running the engine can use a device to communicate with the company if there is a safety briefing first and all members agree that it would not constitute a safety hazard.

I knew this was gonna happen someday but I put Mr. Sanchez up there with Mr. Gates. Make Mr. optional.

I'm stunned by the stupidity of all of this.

ALL of this.

Don't even get me started about my boss not having the ability to use a radio at all on the locomotive because LAMCO has deinstalled handsets on 90% of their locomotives.... and those overhead radios....let me tell you about them....don't even get me started!!!! How is this any different than the distractions they are legislating against???

Excellent points, Snippy, and the fact that even the handset mounting and the connection for the handset on the engineer's side are missing on those overhead radio units, adds more fuel to the fire. Those overhead radios on those miserable desktop control units are hard to transmit on, hard to hear, and distracting as heck when you try to use them. Just another reason I hate desktop controls.

But LAMCO swears they're going to put more handsets on the units. Now, maybe they'll rewire the speakers on the Boss-o-Train's side of the engine.

Ny question is about using cell phones in case of emergency. Does "The house just burned down and our son is being rushed in to emergency brain surgery" count as an emergency?

BD, they'll get to you when they can.  If its practicable.  Feasible.  Doesn't hinder operations.  Never forget they value you.  Just keep saying it.  I think my tongue is stuck.  OMG!

spacer.gifFRA bans mobile-phone use by rail crews

(Bloomberg News circulated the following story by Angela Greiling Keane on October 2.)

WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. regulators are forbidding railroad crews to use mobile phones and other personal electronic devices while operating trains following a fatal collision in California last month.

The Federal Railroad Administration announced the ban in an e-mail today. The move follows a Sept. 12 Los Angeles commuter- train crash that the National Transportation Safety Board said happened seconds after the engineer sent a text message.

While most railroads have rules and procedures that restrict use of electronic devices, the measures haven't been effective, the rail agency, which regulates safety, said in the order issued today.

The head-on collision between the commuter train and a Union Pacific Corp. freight train killed 25 people, making it the deadliest U.S. passenger rail accident in 15 years, according to the NTSB.

Metrolink, the Los Angeles-area commuter service involved in the crash, already banned its engineers from using electronic devices in locomotive cabs before the accident.

The Federal Railroad Administration said other accidents this decade may have been caused by rail employees using such devices, including one in June in which a Union Pacific worker was struck and killed by a train after walking behind it while talking on his phone.

The regulator listed six other freight railroad accidents, including some that were fatal, dating back to 2000 that involved mobile-phone use.

I write those engines with the speakers not working on my side. I have a hard time hearing those overhead radios.
