I've been keeping an unoffical log of axel counts and the time passing of the 2 detectors on the BNSF Scenic Sub at MP 1762.0 and MP 1778.6 since July. Just something to do while I'm having a smoke in the garage. Today or this evening, I hear a detector give an axel count of "277". It has to be a fuckup unless any of you can figure out how a train can have an odd number of axels.

4 detectors in 100 miles. I've seen 4 different axle counts. We have one detector that usually gives 1 more than what you have. I say its counting the EOT. Talk about a joke. Nothing can beat a pair of eyes. I have been stopped by Tower Operators, and TrackMen, good stops every one. I have been stopped by DD's and 75%of the time never found anything. I was recently told that the Mechanical Dept is tracking 4 events. One is sure indication of a Hot Journal bearing. The other 3 are simply tracking info for the pleasure of the Mechanical Dept. This means that more than 75% of the time a DD stops you is for BULLSHIT. They are installing a new Wheel Impact DD in the middle of a 50mph level stretch. One of the last places you can run for a while even with a big train. Hell, its been a while since I had an ENGINE that didn't have flat spots, much less the cars. Any coal train around here would wake the dead. An empty train with the sound magnification of all those open hoppers is three times worse. Guess they better put in a couple mile long hotbox sidings.
Once again, Snippy wonders aloud, "WHY DO THEY ALLOW THESE BOZOS TO FLATTEN WHEELS?"
What changed from the olden days? Did wheels get cheaper?
I've been watching alot of my own train videos that I've taken back in the early 90's mainly to write down locations and engine numbers for editing purposes. Man trains are noisy. Seems every train at speed has 2/3's of the cars with flat spots. An incentive to pick a hotel/motel a good couple miles away from the tracks.

Snippy, LAMCO appreciates your concern about flat wheels. Perhaps you're the true inspiration for one of the award-winning videos being shown at the SQ workshop this year. LAMCO shares your concern.

After we saw that video a guy in our class (who I guess worked with steel) said that whoever made that video was an idiot, because the damage shown to the wheels was from dirt in the metal from when the wheel was made. There was a specific word for it. I pointed out if they were so concerned then maybe we should not have to keep putting so many usless handbrakes on tracks. The TM actually wrote down my suggestion.

Two brakes. The FRA recently came to a location where handbrakes in the yard have never been required, said that was a no-no, now, there's two handbrakes on every track. It isn't like these cars were going to run away. You gotta love them. Nobody was happy about this development, on either side of the fence.
Are you talking about Buckeye? The samething happened there, even though I don't think it was the FRA. They actually had to put on U-men with trucks, cause the brakes have to be on the rear.

I think it might be universal now. No, my home terminal.

We put 2 brakes on yard tracks and sometimes more depending on the cars, and or location ;crappy grain hoppers don't hold shit. Our new stupidintendant did'nt like that it was taking crews too long to put on 2 proper handbrakes on the end of tracks so he wanted the conductor to put brakes on the top end of trains being pulled into the yards. It took 2 times as long. They are so concerned about 5 to 8 minutes!!!!
