Lease returns...

...at least that's what we've been told. I took a peek yesterday, and our yard is full of 40-2s.

Damn near all of 'em green/black former BN power. Some still good, some crap, but all of 'em have leases that'll expire by year's end.

Some will stay here, some will return ta the 'owners,' and some may find new homes.

BNsf is fast becoming an ALL GE outfit. Apparently the Dash-9s, and EVOs are running at least 92 days before failures occur. Wow! Very impressive numbers.

I remember a time when our older EMDs were running at 105 days, consistently...and they saw every type of service BN put 'em into, including towing Amtrak breakdowns at 70-MPH! Not bad for a 35+ year old, six-axle workhorse!

Gonna miss 'em...hafta say that. The first BIG power this grunt worked on... When four or five of 'em flew by Interbay towin' a stacker at 8-notch... Now that was impressive!

Same must be happening here. Hinkle has about 80 40-2's sitting on the dead line. There is a bunch of those shitty late 80's early 90's GEs there too. There is a 40-2 the 3399 that is set up as a remote in the yard here. Sad fate for an old road unit.

Yesterday...Oct. 31st., Haloween...shot a few pics of our yard. Full of 40s! Everywhere. All the 'unoccupied' [?] tracks, and runners, filled with supposedly returns. All defueled [to approx. 500 gals.], batts disconnected, coolant dumped...

Same fate is reserved for old Army Tanks. The load them up on
an aircraft carrier and dump them off one by one into the ocean.
Hard to believe that a SD40-2 won't live on in another country.
Was looking through RRpicture Archives.net and there was
photo set of a ship load of ex CR/CSX B36-7/8's being unloaded
in South America. Interesting the GE's were to be riding around
on narrow gauge trucks. SD40-2's are popular in Australia too!
There are several mining railroads in Australia that have bought
up the first wave of available SD40-2's. Seen many of the U30C/
C30-7's ending up in South America as well. A locomotive has to
be totally destroyed to end up in the graveyard these days.
Locomotive rebuilding has kept a huge number of locos still
running around or sold to another country.

Ever seen them rebuild GE-unk? All I've ever seen is the appropriate scrapper's torch or Taco Bell with 'em. (Make a run for the border.)

What ever they have there I have no idea..  Boss said that the plan at this date is too run 60 of them in to the shop for Helms inspector to go through and inspect and for shop people too bring up too their standards and then off too St. Louis.. Anyone know if they have a shop there or if there just going too a holding yard??

Last night, on the Balmer 'office' lead there sat a few dead 40-2s. Maybe five, six...

Either enroute ta Tac, or sandwiched into a power consist headed further east.

Either way...hate ta see the old gals go. How long have they been our 'bread and butter' at Interbay?

With the dropping oil prices, we may see them again.

The best locomotives ever built. (Other than the 4-axle SD40-2's without a turbocharger.)

Believe it or don't... BNsf still has a few 45-2s.

Rated at a full 3600! Six axles of rompin' stompin' turbocharged 645-E3B power! Blue/yellow. Don't ask me why they're still on the roster...maybe sf actually owned 'em!

BN shed all 20 cylinder power twenty-five, thirty years ago.

None of Interbay's grunts are happy about this lease return issue, but what can we do?

More'n likely SD-60s Fred. We've been seein' 'em on our rails too. A couple red ones...and two white ones. In the 6000 number series...

Real pullin' power! Reliability built in. No electronics! But...they'll never measure up to EPA standards for emissions. The only way around that is ta shut 'em down when ya don't need the extra ponies!

Don't let yer power idle for more'n two hours! Shut all lights, radios, etc., first...then kill the engine! Your outfit will be glad ya did! And Mother Earth will feel just a little better!

We get those on occasion as extra horsepower, but rarely lead qualified. I think they are now "CEFX" units.
