NORFOLK, Va. - Norfolk Southern Railway will aim to reduce crew starts and take other cost-cutting measures in the face of a shrinking economy, the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot has reported. NS's chief financial officer, James Squires, announced the decision at the Citi Investment Research transportation conference in New York.
Measures will include "train consolidations around the system, scaled-back hiring, and reduced maintenance programs" if business stays soft, Squires said. He added that the railroad might spend less on capital projects in 2009 compared to this year, a decision fellow Class I Canadian Pacific has already made.
The company plans to provide a fuller explanation in January, Squires said.
Yesterday was day one of operation cluster fuck. They picked a great time of year to introduce the their new train consolidation program. LAMCO got lucky yesterday in that it wasn't 10 degrees colder, or there would have had trains tied down waiting on recrews.
